Unit II – Lesson 2 Lesson 2: I Speak My Own Language
Winning Values: Discipline and
Obedience
Bible Story: The Tower of Babel
Text: Genesis 11:1 – 9 Bible Verse:
Proverbs 3:12 “…because the Lord disciplines those He loves, as a father the son he delights in.” Main Ideas:
1. God disciplines us because He loves
us. 2. We must obey His commands. 3. We need to do things for God’s glory, not ours. 4. We should love our own language. Bible Story: The Tower of Babel Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. As people moved eastward they found a plain in Shinar (Babylon) and settled there. They decided to make bricks and baked it thoroughly. They used brick instead of stone and tar for mortar They proudly declared, ‘Let’s make a name for ourselves and build a city with a tower that reaches up to the heavens, otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” God saw how they were working together to make such proud plans and decided to put a stop to their building by confusing their language so they could not understand each other. The workers started babbling in different languages and stopped building the city together. That is why it was called Babel – because there the Lord confused the language of the world. The building work stopped and groups of people scattered to live in different parts of the earth. Thoughts to Ponder: The people in the time of the Old Testament were using a common language for all. They settled in one place and built a tower that would reach up to the heavens. But their actions were not in obedience to God’s command to occupy the whole earth, God caused them to speak in various languages. Thoughts to Ponder:
Those who had understood each
other had regrouped themselves and gone their way, leaving the ruins of the Tower of Babel. This is a form of God’s discipline to His people. Through this, nations were born and propagated their own native tongues. Thoughts to Ponder:
To speak our language is an essence
of nationalism because our own language is also the soul of our own nation and country. Using our language daily reflects our loyalty to our own country. It expresses our sense of nationalism. Thoughts to Ponder: But what really is the language we are going to use that would show our sense of nationalism and loyalty to our country? Whatever opinions the experts would say, our languages in the Philippines, whether indigenous or foreign in origin, express our loyalty and sense of nationalism to our country.
