Figure 2 shows the optical bench as it is mounted on the chassis of the vela XL. The optical tray is
mounted on rubber bumps with four 5mm socket head cap screws. Normally, the optical tray does not
need to be dismounted for service purposes. The collimator mount, the beam combining block (BC-
Block) and the power shutter are fixed with screws from the downside of the optical tray. Normally
there should not be any need to disassemble them.

13.2 The incoupling block

This chapter will explain the components of the incoupling block, the exchange of the incoupling lens
and the proper adjustment of the lens relative to the application fiber.

13.3 Adjustment of the z-distance (Figure 10)
It is absolutely important to adjust properly the distance of the incoupling lens relative to the
Application fiber properly. Therefore a specially prepared SMA Base Mount and a dial gauge are
required. Before measuring the distance, please ensure that the tip of the gauge is clean and the dial
gauge is calibrated to zero on a plain surface. Lift the probing pin, put the dial gauge on the specially
prepared SMA Base Mount and lower carefully the probing pin until it touches the surface of the lens.
The reading represents the actual z-distance. Adjust the z- distance by turning the brass lens mount
clockwise for a higher value and anticlockwise for a lower reading. The correct reading is 24.80mm
(+/- 0.05mm). After adjusting the z-distance to the correct value, fix the lens mount with the locking
ring. Please ensure that the value is not corrupted by doing this. Take care of the cleanliness of the
lenses surface. Maybe a new cleaning with ethanol and wipes is indicated. Then reassemble the SMA
Base Mount vice versa as shown in figure 5.

Fig. 11 Adjustment of the focal distance

Service and Maintenance Manual Draft MOAP.doc page 64 of 101

13.4 The Beam Combining Block
In the BC-block the pilot laser and the beam of the working wavelength are aligned to one axis.
Therefore the Pilot Laser is deflected at 90° by the Beam Combining Mirror (BC), whereas the working
laser beam pass through the BC- Mirror.

If the BC-Mirror must be replaced, loosen the plastic screws and take out the old BC. When installing a
new one, please take care of the cleanliness and the mounting directions.

13.5 The Pilot Laser Module

The pilot laser emits laser radiation at a wavelength of 532nm in order to give the user an optical
guidance during the treatment.

Set Screw

Fig. 14 Pilot laser module

If the pilot laser needs to be changed, please loosen the set screw at the side of the pilot laser mount
and retract the old one. The new one is installed vice versa.

Service and Maintenance Manual Draft MOAP.doc page 66 of 101

13.6 The Power Shutter
®
The optical path in the vela XL is interrupted by a power shutter. This shutter is a self-closing
construction, which is actively opened once laser radiation is intentionally emitted. The status of the
shutter, whether it is open or closed, is monitored by two optical fork sensors. Each of the sensors has
to work properly and the detector flag must be mounted in the correct position (see figure 15).

The power shutter is also used as a mount for the deflection optic, which directs a fraction of the laser
radiation (~ 1%) backwards into the power measuring unit.

Deflection Optic

Fig. 18 Deflection optic - mounted on power shutter

It is important that the deflecting optic is clean and that the correct mounting direction is maintained.
By rotating the deflection optic, the amount of laser radiation entering the measuring spheres can be
influenced. Generally it should be set to maximum.

Fig. 19 Power measuring unit

The power measuring unit consists of a measuring sphere in which the laser radiation is equally
distributed and a power measuring PCB with potentiometers for the adjustment of the amplification on
the front side and two detectors on the back side.

Fig. 20 Power Sensor - detailed view

If the PCB needs to be changed, please ensure the proper fitting of the Sensors within the appropriate
holes in the measuring spheres as shown in figure 20.

Service and Maintenance Manual Draft MOAP.doc page 70 of 101

The entire power measuring unit should be mounted in a way that most of the radiation which is
deflected by the deflection optic enters the measuring spheres. This alignment is performed
simultaneously with the alignment of the deflection optics during the power calibration process. The
potentiometers are tuned in order to compensate a channel deviation between the sensors and for a
proper preset of the amplification.

13.8 Mounting the collimator

The collimator and the light transmission cable have to be handled with care. Figure 21 shows the
collimator mount with six fine-thread screws, which are not only used to fix the collimator in its position
but also to adjust its proper position regarding the laser beam. This chapter is about the correct
mounting of the collimator and the proper adjustment of the optical axis.

Fig. 21 Collimator Mount

Mount the collimator centric in the collimator mount as shown in figure 22.

Fig. 22 Collimator centric in collimator mount

The offset is between

the mount screws,
almost in contact to
the distal ones.

Fig. 23 Axial Position of the collimator

After diligently mounting the collimator, please check the centricity of the laser beam. Therefore set
the power level to the lowest possible setting and release laser radiation. Check the centricity of the
laser beam with thermo-sensitive paper at the entry and the back side of the power shutter.

Service and Maintenance Manual Draft MOAP.doc page 72 of 101

Laser beam must be
centric referred to the
aperture of the power
shutter.

Fig. 24 Centricity check of laser beam at the entry of the power shutter

Service and Maintenance Manual Draft MOAP.doc page 73 of 101

Please use the fine thread screws to adjust the position of the collimator in order to ensure a proper
passage of the laser beam through the power shutter.

13.9 Near field adjustment of pilot beam and working beam

The next step needs the use of the reticule auxiliary tool.

Fig. 26 Reticule and mounting of the reticule

The reticule is mounted at the front end of the BC-Block. The incoupling block must be disassembled
first.
Attach a sheet of thermo sensitive paper to the plain front end of the reticule auxiliary tool.

Center the Loosen

pilot beam screw (2x)

Fig. 27 Reticule, pilot beam and adjustment of the near field

On the thermo sensitive paper you see the pattern of the pilot beam. Adjust the position of the near
field of the pilot beam by manipulating the black base plate as shown in figure 27.
After achieving a proper adjustment of the near field setting of the pilot beam, release laser radiation
(lowest setting possible) in order to check the centricity relative to the reticule.

Service and Maintenance Manual Draft MOAP.doc page 74 of 101

working beam

Fig. 28 Alignment of working beam and pilot beam – near field

The position of the working beam is adjusted by manipulating the fine thread screws of the collimator
mount. After the first shot take a new sheet of thermo sensitive paper. A proper alignment is shown in
the right hand side picture above. For the following procedures please leave the reticule in place but
remove the sheet of thermo sensitive paper

Service and Maintenance Manual Draft MOAP.doc page 75 of 101

13.10 Far field adjustment of pilot beam and working beam

Place a sheet of plain thermo sensitive paper in a distance of approx. one meter from the BC-block.

Fig. 29 Far field adjustment

Release laser radiation in order to create a marking of the target area of the working beam. Therefore
the output power must be increased compared to the previous procedure.
Then align the pilot beam onto the mark of the working beam by manipulating the gimbal mount of the
pilot laser module as shown in figure 30.

Gimbal mount

Fig. 30 Far field adjustment, gimbal mount and proper alignment

Service and Maintenance Manual Draft MOAP.doc page 76 of 101

Keep in mind that the manipulation of the gimbal mount could harm the prior adjustment of the near
field setting. You need to check and eventually correct the near field setting again according to the
chapter above. As last step, remove the reticular and remount the incoupling block.

13.11 Mounting and adjustment of the incoupling

Starting from the fact that the lens holder is already centered by using the auxiliary tool, please mount
the incoupling block to the BC-block. Please do not tighten the screws properly in the first step.

Pilot beam pattern

off- center!

Fig. 31 Pre alignment of the incoupling block

First, attach a small piece of adhesive tape on the front thread of the SMA-adapter in order to get a
screen to observe the pattern of the pilot beam. Second, move the loose incoupling block until the
green spot appears in the center of the SMA-adapter. Do not manipulate the micrometer screws for
that purpose! Then fasten the screws.
A diligent performance of the near- and farfield settings combined with a proper pre alignment of the
incoupling block ensures the possibility to carry on the adjustment of the incoupling.
The fine tuning of the incoupling is done by the calculation method. Therefore you need a 600µm test
fiber and your power measuring equipment. Connect the test fiber to the SMA-adapter and release
laser radiation (lowest possible power setting). Adjust the incoupling as described below.

Fig. 32 Principle of incoupling alignment

The focus lens pictures a small spot on the proximal surface of the fiber. Find the upper edge of the
fiber by turning the micrometer screw clockwise (green) while you release laser radiation. The reading
of the power meter will drop instantly if you reach the edge. Please note the reading of the micrometer
screw. Turn the micrometer screw anticlockwise (red) until you find the lower edge of the fiber surface.
The instant drop of the power reading will indicate that. Stop emitting laser radiation and note the
reading of the micrometer screw. Now calculate the arithmetic mean of the two readings. Turn the
micrometer screw clockwise again until you reach the calculated number.
- repeat the procedure with the second micrometer screw
- change the test fiber to a 230µm one
- repeat the procedure to ensure a proper coupling efficiency with fibers of small diameter

Energy measurement of vela® XL
®
To validate that the vela XL system is well aligned and all optical parts are good, we need to do an
energy measurement at every installation, maintenance or any other work which is done at the
System. For the energy measurement the following steps are required.

Neecessary accessories and measurement tools:

- Calibrated measurement head (recommended: Ophir powermeter 150W)

!!! Measurement head and measurement

display have to be calibrated !!!

- Calibrated measurement display (recommended: USB-Interface Ophir, or Nova Display)

- Measurement software (recommended: USBI 2.0), if USB-Interface is used

Service and Maintenance Manual Draft MOAP.doc page 79 of 101

- Fiber 600µm
- Fiber 365µm
- Fiber 230µm
- Fiberstripper
- Fibercutter

Set up the energy measurement:

Service and Maintenance Manual Draft MOAP.doc page 80 of 101

Note:
®
Check if the focus lens is clean! Therefore remove the cap of the SMA-connector at vela XL
system and start the device (without having a fiber connected). Hold a sheet of paper about
20cm away from the SMA-connector.
Now you should have a clear green spot on the sheet. If you have dirt on the lens there will
be some dots or streaks in the green spot. In this case you have to clean or exchange the
focus lens. Otherwise you will have losses of laser energy at the focus lens.

• Set up fiber for energy measurement:

To reach the Optimum measurement result, first you have to prepare the fibertip.
The profile of the Aiming Beam must be as round as possible like in fig.1. Therefore we may need
to rework the fiber.

• Setting the distance from fibertip to measurement head:

The distance from the fibertip to the measurement head should be 3-4cm (fig.1). With this distance
you should get an aiming beam with at least 1cm diameter (fig.2).

3 – 4cm

fig.1 fig.2

• Set up the USBI 2.0 software:

Change all settings like it is shown in fig.3.
Display: “Watts”
Average: “(None)”
Mode: “Power”
Laser: “.8-6”
Range: “AUTO”
Graphic Limits: “Min Power 0.0”, ”Max Power 130.0”

Service and Maintenance Manual Draft MOAP.doc page 81 of 101

fig.3

• Perform Energy Measurement:

Always start with the 600µm fiber. Connect the fiber to the system.
®
Choose an energy value on the vela XL Display (for example 5W), press Laser-Ready button.
When “Ready” (fig.4) appears in the display press the footswitch for at least 5sec., until the energy
on the display gets stable! Release footswitch and write down the energy which is shown in the
USBI software. (fig.5)

fig.4 fig.5

Service and Maintenance Manual Draft MOAP.doc page 82 of 101

Note:

If you can’t reach the laser energy which you should reach, check if the collimator and the focus lens
are still aligned.

For maintenance we need to measure the following values:

- 365µm Fiber: 5W, 30W, 80W
- 230µm Fiber: 5W, 30W

Note:
Any measurement head has a specific tolerance of max. +/-20%. So it is possible that you will get
an energy value which may not be the value you have expected.
For example, if you choose 30W on the laser display, the measurement display will show an
external energy between 24W and 36W.

Filling up the water tank

- To fill up the water tank first get out the funnel (A) next to the optical bench
- Release the secure bracket (B) and plug (C) from the filler neck
- Put the funnel into the filler neck (D)

Fill up water tank with de-ionized water till the water level is between Min. and Max. marks on the water tank
(E).
When putting in the plug (C) the water level seems to get under the minimum (F), but this is just because of
the air pressure when you put in the plug.

After filling up the tank the first time, it is needed to run the heat exchanger must run in “standalone mode”.
Therefore we need the bridge for the heat exchanger (Fig. 4). Put it into “X1” of the signal plugs.

Switch on main switch on the backside of the unit. The heat exchanger now should be “on” but not running.
Put the loosen cable from the bridge plug into “pin2” of the plug for about 2-3 seconds. The heat exchanger
should start running. Now the water level in the filler neck will sink. Fill in water to the tank till it is between
Min. and Max. level again. Let the heat exchanger run for about 10 minutes and check the water level
several times. After the last refill, please let the heat exchanger run for another 10 minutes to get sure that
there are no more air bubbles in the cooling circuit.

Service and Maintenance Manual Draft MOAP.doc page 85 of 101

Unplug the bridge plug and plug in the signal plug to “X1”.
Now the system is ready to start up. If there is still a “cooling unit error” at the startup, check if the water
level is ok.
To drain out the water from the heat exchanger remove secure bracket and plug from the filler neck and just
put the filler neck under the bottom line of the water tank so the water can drain out.

Replace heat exchanger

In order to replace the heat exchanger first we have to drain out all the water from the system. When the
water tank is empty the first time, first you have to unplug the water inlet from the laser module. Now the
water from the laser module can drain out to the water tank. Also drain out the rest of the water from the
water tank. Now you can also unplug the water outlet (be careful, there could be still some water coming
out).

Disconnect wires (A), (B), (C) and (D) from the heat exchanger.

Remove holding pin (E) for side panel and remove screws (F), (G), (H), (I) and (K).

Now the heat exchanger can be lifted out of the rack.

After replacing the heat exchanger it is necessary to configure the temperature Limit comparators (LC)
of the heat exchanger.
