A. Describe the rhetoric of the mathematical language

The rhetoric of the mathematical language is when a mathematician adjust their

choices based on the audience preference or response.

B. What are the characteristics of the mathematical language? Enumerate and

describe each.
a. Precise – Use of symbols in mathematical language
b. Concise – saying the idea or thought briefly in mathematical language.
c. Powerful – a mathematical language that been used in variety of
professions such as engineering, etc.

C. What are the parts of speech of the mathematical language?

a. Noun – refers to numbers
b. Pronoun –refers to variables
c. Verb – refers to symbols that relates
d. Connectives – refers to operations
e. Punctuations – refers to symbols of groups

D. Give three examples of each of the following: (i) mathematical expression, (ii)
mathematical sentence

1. Mathematical expression
- 2+1+3
- 3x+4
- 4x+6

Lesson 5. Sets, Relations and Functions

Highlights

A. What is a set?
Set refers to a group or collection of objects

B. Let A and B be subsets of a universal set U. Give the theoretical definition of the
following:
1. Union of A and B – collection of every element in set A and B.
2. Intersection of A and B – collection of every similar element in set A and B.
3. Complement of A – collection of similar elements from set U and B that does
not have a similar element from set A.
4. A – B – All the non-similar elements of set B from set A will be included
5. B – A – All the non-similar elements of set A from set A will be included
6. A x B – cartesian product of 2 sets which set A will represent x and set B for
y.

C. What is a function?

A function is the one that assign a set to another set.

Lesson 6. Binary Operations

Highlights

A. What is a binary operation?

The binary operation include an S set which if 2 numbers are taken from this set
then the result will be a number from the S set.

B. What are the properties of a binary operation? Enumerate and explain each.
a. Closure property – the value acquired should be similar to value of
provided set.
b. Commutative property – different types of binary operation will have
the same value.
c. Associative property -the value will still not change even if elements
are grouped.
d. Identity element – the identity of an element will not change if an
element will preserve another element in a binary operation.
e. Inverse element – it is applied to every element of sets thus, making
each element have an inverse identity depending on its particular
identity.
