The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,


And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,


And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay


In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh


Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Poem Analysis

Stanza
The poem has 4 stanza and each stanza has 5 lines.

Meter
"The Road Not Taken" is primarily iambic tetrameter, which means that each of the
four stanzas is five lines long and rhymes ABAAB.

If Frost followed the standard iambic pentameter, each line would be five "feet" long;
however, Frost writes this poem in four "feet" or tetrameter. (In poetry, feet or units
contain stressed and unstressed syllables)

Rhyme
This means that the first line of the stanza rhymes with the third and fourth line, while
the second line rhymes with the fifth line.

Rhyme Scheme
The rhyme scheme is in the format of: ABAAB CDCCD EFEEF GHGGH.

Rhythm
This poem is written in iambic tetrameter, which means that each line has four "feet,"
which means that a person reading the poem aloud would naturally stress four
syllables in each line, giving the poem a continuous rhythmic beat that lends it
cohesion.

Genre
Narrative Poem – It contain all the elements of a story and are normally longer than
average.
