Henry : Wow! You have visited many places around the world, so when did you come to US?
Josh : I arrived here last week. I’m coming here to get a job.
Henry : that’s great. By the way, my name is Henry, I live in Manhattan.
Josh : I’m Josh. It’s very nice to meet.

National Library and then go straight until you find downtown bus stop.

George : How long does it take to get to the Hospital?
Diana : 30 minutes, it’s in front of the Stadium. If you get lost, you can ask people in any newspaper stands right

Jessica : It is so nice of you to help me finish this thesis. We should celebrate this occasion.

Tyrese : Oh, no. I wish I could but I’m afraid I can’t. I have to get back to my office. I have an appointment with
my director. He needs me to accompany him overworking.

Simon : As long as my passport is not expired, probably eight months to go. I enjoy living in my

Marie : I am still unemployed.
Angela : I thought you were hired in the pharmacy department.

Marie : Apparently, they only need a single woman. Anyway, what do you do now? How do you like your new
job?
Angela : I like it so much. It pays well. It seems to have a good benefit package.
Marie : What benefits are there?
Angela : Well, it has great health insurance complete with medical and hospitalization coverage.
Marie : You mean, they cover dental and eye coverage too.
Angela : Right. They also have family leave and retirement plan.
Marie : That’s the good thing of being civil servant.

Marie : I’ve already had. I’ve worked as a waitress, secretary, clerk, and typist. They are all full time jobs.
Angela : You must have lots of experience by now. You won’t have trouble filling your application letter. Don’t

Michael : Oh no, another vocabulary challenge. This thing gives me a headache.
Janet : Come on, it’s fun.

CHARACTERIZING PEOPLE
Carrie : How do you get along with your colleagues at work?
Samantha : They are amazing. I have plenty of close friends, both males and females. However, I love
Charlotte the most.
Carrie : I do too/ so do I. She is gorgeous, independent, and thoughtful.
Samantha : I know. Her husband is awesome too. He is very supportive and loyal.
Carrie : That’s really nice. I mean, it takes a long time to find out is if someone trustworthy and sincere.
Samantha : I’ve met some really nice people but they turn out to be self-centered and indifferent, worst of
all, two-faced.
Carrie : What does it mean?
Samantha : It is kind of person who smiles at you and says bad thing about you behind your back.
Carrie : That’s kind of person whom I want to avoid.
Samantha : Me too! They are phony types. I can’t stand them.

DESCRIBING A FAMILY
Pierce : When is baby due?
Bridgitte : In a month, how’s your aunt?
Pierce : Pregnant too. She is expecting her fourth child.
Bridgitte : Wow, you come from a large family, don’t cha?
Pierce : Pretty big. I have sister and twins brothers. My mom died when I was 7 and my dad remarried, so
ended up with three half-brothers.
Bridgitte : And you are the oldest one?
Pierce : No, I’m the second one. What about you?
Bridgitte : I’m the only child. But I have an adopted sister and plenty of cousins.
Pierce : How old is she?
Bridgitte : She is four years younger than me.
Pierce : Do they live with you?
Bridgitte : Yes, they live upstairs along with my nieces and nephews. It’s extremely noisy.
Pierce : Not to mention your baby in one month to go!

SAYING CONGRATULATION
Joan : You did it! You really did it Adam!
Adam : What is happening with you? Stop yelling at me. People are looking.

Joan : You did it Adam. You never give up. And now it pays off. You passed the scholarship. You’re
going to New York!
Adam : The announcement is on 13th, August. It can’t be now.
Joan : Who cares? This is one of a million experiences. You should be excited.
Adam : Calm down. There is still one test left. And it’s going to be very difficult.
Joan : Whatever! Let me just say congratulation. I’m so proud. Best of luck in NY!
Adam : Cut it out! I’m not going anywhere yet.

GOING ON VACATION
Hendry : How was your summer?
Jim : I was home. But my kids were all away at camp. It was crowded but restful. I heard you went to
Ibiza.
Hendry : Yeach, It‘s a very nice tropical island. We can go clubbing, diving and etc.
Jim : Sounds very expensive. Why don’t you try to go on a more economical vacation the next time?
Hendry : I’m planning to go to my grandparents’ home on thanksgiving. In the meantime, I have to finish
my college. I have to pay my intuition and see my advisor to sign up for the same non-credit
courses. I’m looking forward to the next holiday.
Jim : I envy you. Sometimes I wish I had enough money to just quit my job and do nothing.
Hendry : It will be nice for a few weeks, or even a few months, but then what? Is that really your
objectives in life to do nothing? I think you should have leisure time to “stop and smell the rose”
as they say
Jim : I’m so fed up with this routines, and deadlines.
Hendry : Sounds like you need a vacation!

STAYING HEALTHY
Chloe : You look awful! What’s the matter?
Amanda : I won’t be in class today. I’m not feeling so good.
Chloe : What’s going on?
Amanda : I’m not sure. I’ve throwing up since morning with stomachache and fever.
Chloe : It could be only cold.
Amanda : I don’t know. I have such bad stuffy nose and cough. I can hardly breathe. I ache all over my
body.
Chloe : Did you take any medicine?
Amanda : Yes, I’ve already picked up my prescription in the drugstore. But it’s getting worse.
Chloe : Do you think you need to see a doctor again?
Amanda : That won’t be necessary. A massage would help for the pain in my neck.
Chloe : That’s a good idea. Whatever you have, it may be contagious.
Amanda : Thanks for stopping by. Could you call me later with the assignment? I don’t want to fall behind
the class.
Chloe : Got it. Get well soon.

FALLING IN LOVE
Matthew : Are you here alone? Where’s Jack?
Donna : We got divorced. He cheated on me with his new secretary. What about you? Are you still with
Kim?
Matthew : No more, I dumped her. She loves her job more than everything.
Donna : That’s a pity. Are seeing anyone special now?
Matthew : Yes, indeed. I have crush on a girl named Amy. She’s wonderful. You will meet her tomorrow
night. You’ll love her.
Donna : I can’t wait. Where is the relationship going anyway?
Matthew : I’ve already popped the question. We got engaged last month and we’re getting married next
week.
Donna : How romantic! Good for you. I miss being newlywed.
