Analysis of Writing on Website: National Institutes of
Health
National Institutes of Health (NIH) is body in
United States government for the research
purpose for biomedical and public health
research. The NIH conducts scientific researches
through the NIH Intramural Research Program
(IRP) and also provide research funding to other
non-NIH research facilities.
As it’s a national institute website, this means the
employees in this firm have to write to aware
people of their researches. The reader of this
website can be a person looking for latest
research on trending health issue e.g., corona,
any news worker looking for updates on health-
related researches, any person with medical
background or any blogger.
DESIGN: Lets talk about the design of the
website, they have designed their website with
sections to make the reader to jump to topics
he/she interested to read about. They have used
visual representation to make user to easily find
their interest.
RESEARCH TARGETED TOPIC: They have
written the subject of writing very research
related and avoided use of more in-depth
vocabulary so that anyone can get the subject of
writhing. They have written the core

message/highlight of research in a very concise
and easy way so that the reader can know the
research update only by just reading the topic.
USE OF VISUAL: They have used only one or
two visual representations related to topic to give
the idea of research topic or what this writing is
about along caption to exactly describe what’s
going on in the picture. They used only enough
visual required to in order to give information to
reader.
AT A GLANCE Section: They have made At a
Glance in some writing to give core research
conclusion. So that if we just want to see the
advancement or main points of research.
Concise PARAGRAPHS: They have used first
paragraph to introduce the ground of research.
Then in next paragraph, they tried to cover the
previous advancement of research in a short
paragraph. Then they have used 2 paragraphs to
explain the research and its experimentations
method and results. In the last paragraph they
give the final research outcome.
To The POINT: As they have general type
readers nationwide so they have written to the
point related to research and not deeply talk about
technical or in-depth detail of research which
only a field related person can understand.
 Qualities of Good Technical
Writing

Less use of Pictures: It should be more catching
if it contains the water heater picture or burner
picture so that the user at first glance develop
interest and know what this memo is about.
Use of technical terms and details: This memo
was from Safety Commission to give awareness
about the tap water or hot water scald injuries
and urges to lower their water heater
temperature level to all users. This User can be
anyone with zero knowledge about what even a
thermostat is. Using terms like thermostats and
instructing them the technical process to check
temperature is not necessary as it could be
hazardous for a person with no knowhow about
Heaters should do adjusting thermostat and all.
So, use of technical details and terms is a
problem in this memo.
Conciseness: Although this memo was to provide
awareness and urge them to lower their heaters
temperature by calling heater service available.
So, it should be short and concise so that the
reader just doesn’t ignore it and should get the
message being send by the Safety commission.
Readability: Writer can write safety precautions
using bullets or in form of points under a
heading so if user want to know the precautions
or sops so he/she could get to them easily and
avoid any hazardous situation.
