1. ID Number of Equipment

Main Drive Cement Mill: 531MD140M01

2. Details About Problem Observed

Sparking on the brushes chamber of cement mill main drive ‘’531MD140M01’’ and
also vibration at carbon brushes during its running condition.

After making deeply inspection, note:

➢ Mechanical damage to the slip rings (formation of grooves, stria or scratches
on the slip ring surface)
➢ Carbon brushes rattle or break out

3. Woks Performed

In the case of Mechanical damage to the slip rings, it is recommended to check and
rework slip rings, slightly round off the edges.
Following step were done:

➢ isolated the main drive;

➢ opened the window of brushes chamber
➢ removed all the carbon brushes and all brush holders;
➢ removed the filter of main drive;
➢ disconnected the rotor of the cement mill main drive to the table, means kept it
in free moving without load;
➢ installed small motor connected to the VFD, to drive the rotor of the cement
mill main drive;
➢ Fine the slip rings by using abrasive paper PP180, PP150 then PP320 (in this
process the rotor of main motor has been drive by the small motor within low
speed)
➢ In final use leather belt for final look of slip rings
➢ Cleaned the slip ring area, the brushgear and slip rings thoroughly
➢ installed new brush holders
➢ New brushes have been coarsely ground and fine-ground to the radius of the
slip rings. This has been done in a fixture outside the machine which having
some size as the slip rings. Ground the carbon brushes until at least 80 % of
the contact face of each brush is seated.
➢ Installed those carbon brushes
➢ Cleaned and installed the filter
➢ Proper closed the window of brushes chamber
➢ Removed the small motor
➢ Connected back the cement mill main drive to the table

4. Result

After works, observed:

a) About Diameter of slip ring

- Initial value: 500 mm

- After works value: 498 mm
- Minimum diameter allows: 490mm

b) About Radial run-out of the slip rings

- After works value: 0.1 mm

- Maximum value admissible: 0.2 mm

In final, there is not any sparking on the brushes chamber during running of
cement mill main drive. The behavior of the motor is good. Congratulations to all
team.

Problem has been solved.
