Amount of stuffing box drain
Section Chief N. Inoue
Drawn By Y. Fukuoka
ENGINE TYPE L/S35MC, S42MC

In 1998, amount of stuffing box drain from our 35MC engine is decreased dramatically by third
improvement of stuffing box arrangement. However, the drain amount is different for date of
manufacture of 35MC engine due to 3 times structure-changing.
Accordingly, we received several complaints about the drain amount. Also, we received the
complaint that 42MC engine is discharged too much stuffing drain. Therefore, we summarized
modification history of stuffing box, drain amount and its features and inform you as follows.

■35MC Mk1 (MAN original design)

・Date of application : 1982
・Material : all brass (LBC3C)
・Feature: Normally the ship with Mk1 installed needed to provide the device with purpose-built
tank due to a lot of drain amount.
・Drain amount: 20-30 L/day-cyl

■35MC Mk2
・Date of application: 1985
・Material: The lower scraper ring was changed to cast material. (LBC3C→FC20)
・Feature: The drain amount is increased with increased output. To solve this problem, we adopted
the above and increasing the tension of fitting spring for scraper ring.
・Drain amount: 5-15 L/day-cyl

■35MC Mk6 (early period)

・Date of application: 1994
・Material: no changed
・Feature: We adopted the scraper ring of lamellar type recommended by MAN. However, the
alleviation of the drain was ineffective.
・Drain amount: 10-20 L/day-cyl

■35MC Mk6 (latest)

・Date of application: 1998
・Material: FC20→FC30
・Feature: The scraper ring arrangement was refined and its drain amount was decreased
dramatically.
・Drain amount: small amount (less than 5 L/day-cyl)

■42MC
・Feature: We adopted the scraper ring of lamellar type, and once we refined on the holder
configuration of lamellar in order to prevent stuffing drain being mixed into crankcase.
(refer to MWSN-105)
As an singular case at the service ships carrying our S42MC engines, the drain amount
is suddenly increased at only one cylinder and become normal amount again little by
little. It is estimated that the case is caused by corresponding all gap of scraper rings due
to rotating the scraper ring as running.
In additional to the above, some 42MC engine dispatches a lot of drain (until 500-1000
hours). After the rings fits completely in piston rod, the drain amount becomes as
follows.
・Drain amount: 2-10 L/day-cyl
