 THE COACH’S RESPONSIBILITIES

Coaches carry out a range of tasks and are therefore required to

possess a variety of competencies. Many of these competencies are
developed “on the job” rather than in courses.
Central to coaching is the creation of practice and competition
opportunities that result in desired outcomes for athletes. At the core
of a coach’s role is guiding the improvement of athletes in sport-
specific contexts, taking account of athletes’ goals, needs and stages
of development
