1 COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLO):

1. : Investigate the background process performed by operating systems based on


management of memory, resource and file to ensure the computer system operates
at optimum performance

2. : Perform installation for workstation and domain server using MS Windows server or
Open Source server operating system

3. : Demonstrate awareness of professionalism and computer ethics during practical


work to comply with professionals bodies such as ACM or IEEE

2 OBJECTIVE
Upon completion of lab session, student should be able to:
i. Install A Server Operating System

3 THEORY

Server OSs are designed from the ground up to provide platforms for multi-user, frequently
business-critical, networked applications. As such, the focus of such operating systems
tends to be security, stability and collaboration, rather than user interface.

Server OSes provide a platform for multi-user applications, and most come bundled with a
batch of common server applications, such as Web servers, e-mail agents and terminal
services.

Note:
Because installing an OS can cause serious problem if not completed properly, all OS
installation in this practical will be done in virtual machine only.

4 EQUIPMENT / TOOLS
1. A computer installed with virtual machine application.
2. Windows 2008 server installation CD/DVD or ISO.
3. Drivers and application installer package if required.

ACTIVITY 5A : INSTALLING WINDOWS 2008R2 FOR SERVER

Notes: After the installation finish, create a password for the administrator. Write down
your administrator password in the Table 5.1

Remember, password for Windows Server 2008 must fulfill/contain at least three of these
criteria/condition and 6 characters long.

1) Uppercase characters (A through Z).


2) Lowercase characters (A through Z). Make note of
3) Base 10 digits (0 through 9). your password
4) Non-alphabetic characters (for example, !, $, #, %,@).
PROCEDURES

1. Open VMware Player by double click on the icon

2. Click create new virtual machine for Windows Server 2008 R2


3. Select radio button of Installer disc image file (iso) and click Browse

4. Then select the iso file for Windows Server 2008 R2


5. Ignore the product key and key in p@55word in password and retype the
same password at confirm.

6. Then click Next, VMware Player Massage will appear and click Yes

7. Name the virtual machine as Server1.


8. Select radio button Store virtual disk as a single file and click Next
9. Click Customize Hardware and memory highligted, then drag the scroll bar to 2GB

10. Move to highlight Network Adapter and set radio button to Host-only.

11. Then, Click close and finish.

12. The virtual machine of Server 1 appear in VMware Player


13. Select Server1 and click Play virtual machine

14. Continue with Install VMware tools in Win Server R2 by click


Player/Manage/Install VMware Tools/
15. Then ChooseTypical.

8 CONCLUSION

In conclusion, I be able to install a server operating system in VMware then run it without
failed. Furthermore, I learn about the difference between normal window and server window.
