2 OBJECTIVE
Upon completion of lab session, student should be able to:
i. Install A Server Operating System

3 THEORY

Server OSs are designed from the ground up to provide platforms for multi-user, frequently
business-critical, networked applications. As such, the focus of such operating systems
tends to be security, stability and collaboration, rather than user interface.

Server OSes provide a platform for multi-user applications, and most come bundled with a
batch of common server applications, such as Web servers, e-mail agents and terminal
services.

Note:
Because installing an OS can cause serious problem if not completed properly, all
OS installation in this practical will be done in virtual machine only.

4 EQUIPMENT / TOOLS
1. A computer installed with VirtualBox application.
2. Windows 2012 server installation CD/DVD or ISO.
3. Drivers and application installer package if required.

ACTIVITY 5A : INSTALLING WINDOWS 2012 FOR SERVER

Notes: 1)Download VirtualBox installer at www.virtualbox.org

2) Download Microsoft Windows Server OS 2012 at


https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/evaluate-windows-server-2012-r2 (ISO).

After the installation finish, create a password for the administrator. Write down your
administrator password in the Table 5.1

Remember, password for Windows Server 2012 must fulfill/contain at least three of these
criteria/condition and 8 characters long.

1) Uppercase characters (A through Z).


2) Lowercase characters (A through Z). Make note of
3) Base 10 digits (0 through 9). your password
4) Non-alphabetic characters (for example, !, $, #, %,@).
PROCEDURES

1. Install VirtualBox on your computer.

2. Setup Windows Server 2012

a) Open VirtualBox >> New

b) Set Memory size: 2 GB (leave default) and create Virtual Hard Disk

c) Set ISO file (Windows Server 2012 installer) in the CD-ROM section. Click on
[Optical Drive] and select an ISO location.

d) Start Virtual Machine (Windows Server 2012) to start the Windows setup
process.

e) Windows will restart when completed. Then set the password for Local
Admin as follows.

f) Log on to Windows Server 2012.
