Post-Colonial era after the American colonization of the Philippines.

The Treaty of Paris, which was signed in 1898 after the United States waged war on Spain, saw the
Spanish surrender the Philippine islands in exchange for $20,000,000. The Spanish have controlled the
Philippines for about 333 years. There were some disputes between the United States and the
Philippines in the first years. However, they came together and joined forces to fight alongside the
Americans in World War I. The United States remained to control the Philippines after World War I, and
over time their ties improved significantly. The Tydings/McDuffie Law, which was adopted in 1934,
declared the Philippines a U.S. commonwealth. The Philippines will have 10 years to get ready for full
independence, as approved by the US. But that promise was not kept until 1946 due to WWII and the
Japanese invasion of the Philippines. On July 4, 1946, the Philippines were proclaimed an independent
country by the United States.

The Filipinos gained the freedom to practice whichever religion they choose after the United States
acquired control of the country. (The Catholic church was established as the state religion and was
strictly enforced during the Spanish era.) As a result of this newly discovered religious freedom, several
other churches besides Catholicism emerged.

The Filipino first heard about free education from Americans. Even teachers from the United States
were sent to help build schools so that Filipino children may receive a free education. These educators
collectively went themselves the moniker "Thomasites," after the boat they arrived on, the Thomas.

The teachers would speak English at this time because English was starting to be introduced in the
classrooms. The majority of Filipinos still inevitably include English words in their speech. "Taglish" has
genuinely assimilated into the society. In actuality, English is currently the second official language. The
English language has influenced the Tagalog language greatly. Even though they are frequently
pronounced similarly, the dictionary spelling is Filipino-ized.
