Solubility Lab
Solubility Lab
Introduction: Sugar can melt both in hot and cold water. The sugar solubility refers to how
much of the sugar can dissolve in a given amount of water at a given temperature. The solubility
of sugar in water increases as the temperature rises. Sugar is placed in hot and in cold water. It is
noticed that sugar melts faster in hot water than in cold water. It is expected in this experiment
that if the temperature of the water is high then the sugar will melt faster.
Hypothesis: If the temperature of water is high then the sugar will melt faster because the sugar
solubility increases when the temperature increases.
Aim: To investigate why sugar melts faster in hot water than in cold water.
1. Teaspoon
2. Sugar
3. 250 ml Beaker
4. Cold Water
5. Bunsen burner
6. Timer

Expected Results: It is expected that the time taken for the sugar to melt in hot water should be
shorter than the time taken for the sugar to melt in cold water and therefore the sugar melts faster
in hot water.
Assumptions : There are no other solids placed in the solvent that would affect the melting.
Precautions: Take care with the bunsen burner when lighting it.
Limitations: The procedure did not state at what temperature the hot water should be at.
Sources of error: Not putting on the timer as soon as the sugar is placed into the water making
it have a false time record.
