Objectives

1. To determine the reasons why students would prefer to purchase food from vendors

instead of the cafeteria.

2. To identify problems the canteen might face.

3. To identify ways in which the canteen can improve their service.

Overview

The canteen on the campus of Manning’s School which is located in Savannah-la-mar the

capital of Westmoreland is facing problems with their sales. This is due to the fact that the

students prefer to purchase from outside vendors.

The researcher chose this topic to gain knowledge of the reasons for this and the effect it

has due to his interest in buying food off campus as well. At the end of this the researcher hopes

to gain the attention of the school to implement rules to allow students to purchase food off

campus.
Methodology

The type of research chosen by the researcher was a quantitative one which used the

following methods to collect data questionnaire and observation.

Questionnaire

To gather data for this research the researcher chose to use questionnaire as his method of

collection. These questionnaires consisted of 15 questions which included both open and close

ended questions and were distributed in the school amongst 25 students from different year

groups. Responses were given based on what they think or would want. Questionnaires were the

best choice for the research to provide the data as it is:

1. Provide a quick/faster response time.

2. They prove to be accurate.

3. Confidentiality is ensured.

A complication was found with the questionnaire where not all were returned; the

researcher failed to receive back 5 questionnaires.

Observation

To assist in the data collection process the researcher chose to use observation as an

alternate. Observation were carried out over a period of 2 weeks; first week focused on the
crowds at on campus vendors which then followed with the observation of the crowds at the

canteen (Tastee’s). This proved as an advantage in the collection of primary information.

Limitations included the researcher could not observe students who had brought food from their

household.

Observation

Observations were carried out over a 2-week period to collect primary information.

Throughout that time, it showed that more students buy from canteen than on campus vendors, it

also showed that the on-campus vendors sell different products as to the canteen. It showed that

neither the canteen nor the on campus vendors can supply all the children of the school with

lunch. Incidence occurred such as the canteen running out of food and even the vendors running

out of beverages. Some others complained of shortage in food; these were all observed

throughout the 2 weeks and all happening repeatedly.

Interpretation of Data
This research has proven that there are numerous reasons why students prefer to buy food from
outside vendors. 55% of students buy lunch from the canteen another 5% carry food from home
to eat in the day and the remaining buys food from outside the school. The following are some of
the reasons why students don’t buy food from the canteen: small variety of food, lacking of
quality, financial issues among others.
This was also seen upon observing the students on a daily basis that these are the exact factors
they face. The researcher can understand how they feel as he faces these problems on a daily
basis. There is nothing to be done about this situation by the authorities of the school. There is no
point in trying to get the students to support the school’s canteen because once they have their
mind set up that’s where it stops.
This school is not the only one who faces these challenges, the researcher has personally heard
students from other schools complain about this same issue with their canteen. So it is proven
that not only one school is undergoing this problem.
Findings
The researcher has found out that:
1. 55% of students buy food from the canteen
2. 77 % of students prefer to buy food from outside vendors
3. The main reason for not buying food from the canteen is because of the poor quality food
provided
4. The canteen and the vendor on the school compound can’t provide every student of the
school with food as they run out of food often
Recommendations
1. The canteen can have more stocks so that they don’t run out.
2. The canteen should try to improve customer service.
3. The canteen could provide more options.
4. The canteen can use suggestion boxes to better identify and understand what the students
want.
Conclusion
In conclusion we can say that the reason why students would prefer vendors as opposed
to the canteen is because of the poor quality of food the canteen provides, 55% of students
already purchase from the canteen so if the canteen can fix their problems or downfalls they can
increase the amount of students that purchase from them thus increasing profits.
