Reflect on the following:

• How do you feel as you move along with the music?

• What do you think is the time signature of the music?

What is It

Latin America’s vocal and dance music has been an influence of so many cultural
diversity and traditions. Its richness has greatly influenced other countries and this
kind of music has also flourished in their own country including the Philippines.

Vocal and Dance Forms of Latin American Music

1. Cumbia – a famous courtship dance originating in Panama and Colombia. It uses
the instruments such as the tabora (bass drum), claves (which are hard, thick sticks
that sets the beat), guitar, accordion, clarinet, modern flute, and caja (a type of snare
drum). It is also sometimes called the “Mother of all Latin music”. It is said to have
predated and influenced other types of Latin music including Salsa.

2. Tango – a ballroom dance, musical style, and song that evolves in 1880 in dance
halls in the lower-class districts of Buenos Aires. It came from Spanish word “taner”
meaning “to play” (an instrument).

3. Cha Cha - originated in Cuba and evolved from a slow version of Mambo called
“Triple Mambo”. The rhythm of the dance inspired dancers to dance a hip syncopation
to the forward and back breaks of a mambo which later evolved to a triple step.

4. Rumba – can also be spelled “rhumba”, is a ballroom dance of Afro-Cuban folk-

dance origin. This dance follows with a basic pattern of two quick side steps and a
slow forward step. The music is in 4 time and has an insistent syncopation.
4

2
5. Foxtrot – was named after its creator and vaudeville entertainer Harry Fox, the
foxtrot made its debut in 1914. It consists primarily of walking steps, chassés (step
side, close step), and quarter turns. The music used has an influenced of ragtime that
is in time with syncopated rhythm and the speed of the step varies with the music.

6. Paso Doble - (meaning “double-step” in Spanish) is a passionate dance based on a

Spanish bullfight. The man represents the proud Spanish matador and the woman
represent the bull, picador or flamenco dancer. It is a dramatic dance that tells a story
with sharp, staccato movements, striking body poses, and flamenco style of footwork.

7. Reggae - comes from the term “rege-rege” which means “rags” or “ragged clothes”
that is used to denote a raggedy style of music. Reggae began and flourished in 1960’s
as an evolution of the Rocksteady and Ska musical styles. It is a soulful music in
Jamaica that expresses the pain, struggle, hope and emotion that is felt by them. It is
recognized by its lament-like chanting and emphasizes the syncopated beat.

The best-known proponent of reggae music is Bob

Marley, a Jamaican singer-songwriter, musician,
and guitarist. He achieved international fame and
acclaim for songs such as: One Love, Three Little
Birds; No Woman, No Cry; Redemption Song; and Stir
It Up.

8. Bossa Nova - began in the beaches of Rio de Janeiro in the late 1950s. A small
group of middle-class people such students, artists and musicians came together to
create a new sound. Bossa Nova was a soft samba based on traditional Brazilian music
and rhythms, American jazz, and a new style of Portuguese lyrics where singer often
sung in nasal style. Guitar with nylon strings is the major instrument used to
accompany bossa nova music.

Sitti Navarro is a singer who has become

• Have you played video games?

• How was your experience in playing these type of games?

What is It

Video game is an electronic game that involves

interaction with a user interface or input device, such
as a joystick, controller, keyboard, or motion sensing
devices, to generate visual feedback on a two- or three-
dimensional video display device such as a TV set,
monitor, touchscreen, or virtual reality headset. Video
games are augmented with audio feedback from
speakers or headphones, and optionally with other
types of feedback systems including haptic technology.

Video games are defined based on their platform, which include arcade games, console
games, and PC games. More recently, the industry has expanded onto mobile gaming
through smartphones and tablet computers, and remote cloud gaming. Video games
are classified into a wide range of genres based on their type of gameplay and purpose.

The first video games were simple extensions of electronic games using video-like
output from large room-size computers in the 1950s and 1960s, while the first video
games available to consumers appears in 1972 through way of the Magnavox Odyssey
home console, and the 1971 release of the arcade game Computer Space, followed the
next year by Pong. Today, video game development requires numerous skills to bring
a game to market, including developers, publishers, distributors, retailers, console
and other third-party manufacturers, and other roles.

Since the 2010s, the commercial importance of the video game industry has been
increasing. The emerging Asian markets and mobile games on smartphones in
particular are driving the growth of the industry. As of 2018, video games generated
sales of US$134.9 billion annually worldwide, and were the third-largest segment in
the U.S. entertainment market, behind broadcast and cable TV.

6
Origin of the video games
Early games used interactive electronic devices with
various display formats. The earliest example is from
1947—a "Cathode ray tube Amusement Device" was
filed for a patent on 25 January 1947, by Thomas T.
Goldsmith Jr. and Estle Ray Mann, and issued on 14
December 1948, as U.S. Patent 2455992. Other early
examples include: Christopher Strachey's Draughts
game, the Nimrod computer at the 1951 Festival of
Britain; OXO a tic-tac-toe Computer game by Alexander
S. Douglas for the EDSAC in 1952; Tennis for Two, an
electronic interactive game engineered by William Higinbotham in 1958; Spacewar!,
written by MIT students Martin Graetz, Steve Russell, and Wayne Wiitanen's on a DEC
PDP-1 computer in 1961; and the hit ping pong-style Pong, a 1972 game by Atari.

These preliminary inventions paved the way for the origins of video games today. Ralph
H. Baer, while working at Sanders Associates in 1966, came up with the idea of using
a control system to play a rudimentary game of table tennis on a television screen.
With Sanders' blessing, Baer build out the prototype "Brown Box". Sanders patented
Baer's inventions and licensed them to Magnavox, who commercialized it as the first
home video game console, the Magnavox Odyssey, released in 1972. The success of
the Odyssey and Pong, both as an arcade game and home machine, launched the video
game industry. Both Baer and Bushnell have been given the title the "Father of Video
Games" for their contributions.

Terminology Components of a video game

Platform - a specific combination of electronic
components or computer hardware and associated
software, to operate. The term system is also commonly
used.
Computer game - A gaming computer is a PC or laptop
intended specifically for gaming typically using high-
performance, high-cost components.

device that connects to a common television set or composite video monitor, unlike
PCs, which can run all sorts of computer programs, a console is a dedicated video
game platform manufactured by a specific company. It often comes with a specific
game controller. Major console platforms include Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo.
Handheld console - A handheld gaming device is a small, self-contained electronic
device that is portable and can be held in a user's hands. It features the console, a
small screen, speakers and buttons, joystick or other game controllers in a single unit.
Arcade game- An arcade game generally refers to a game played on an even more
specialized type of electronic device that is typically designed to play only one game
and is encased in a special, large coin-operated cabinet which has one built-in console,
controllers (joystick, buttons, etc.), a CRT screen, and audio amplifier and speakers.
Browser game - A browser game takes advantages of standardizations of technologies
for the functionality of web browsers across multiple devices providing a cross-
platform environment.
Mobile game - With the introduction of smartphones and tablet computers
standardized on the iOS and Android operating systems, mobile gaming has become
a significant platform.

7
Cloud gaming - Cloud gaming requires a minimal hardware device, such as a basic
computer, console, laptop, mobile phone or even a dedicated hardware device
connected to a display with good Internet connectivity that connects to hardware
systems by the cloud gaming provider.

Virtual reality (VR) games - generally require players to use a special head-mounted
unit that provides stereoscopic screens and motion tracking to immerse a player
within virtual environment that responds to their head movements.

Emulation - An emulator enables games from a console or otherwise different system

to be run in a type of virtual machine on a modern system, simulating the hardware
of the original and allows old games to be played.

Game media - Early arcade games, home consoles, and handheld games were
dedicated hardware units with the game's logic built into the electronic componentry
of the hardware.

a
_____

What is It

Yoga is a group of physical, mental, and spiritual practices or disciplines which

originated in ancient India. Yoga is one of the six Āstika schools of Hindu philosophical
traditions. There is a broad variety of yoga schools, practices, and goals in Hinduism,
Buddhism, and Jainism.

The beginnings of Yoga were developed by the Indus-Sarasvati civilization in Northern

India over 5,000 years ago. The word yoga was first mentioned in the oldest sacred
texts, the Rig Veda. The Vedas were a collection of texts containing songs, mantras
and rituals to be used by Brahmans, the Vedic priests.

The most notable among these pioneers was Tirumalai Krishnamacharya. He was a
renowned scholar of Hindu philosophy who held degrees in all six schools of Hindu
philosophy. Adiyogi Lord Shiva is the first Yogi of all times. That is why Lord Shiva
is known as Adi-Yogi. Adiyogi means “The First Yogi”- one who introduced Yoga. Do
note that in Yogic culture Shiva is not shown as a God, but he is shown as a Yogi.

Everything in nature is made up of five basic elements: earth, water, fire, air, and
akash. Knowledge of the five elements allows the yogi to understand the laws of nature
and to use yoga to attain greater health, power, knowledge, wisdom and happiness.
Hatha is also translated as ha meaning “sun” and the meaning “moon.” This refers to
the balance of masculine aspects—active, hot, sun—and feminine aspects—receptive,
cool, moon—within all of us. Hatha yoga is a path toward creating balance and
uniting opposites.

10
Prāṇāyāma is the practice of breath control in yoga. In modern yoga as exercise, it
consists of synchronizing the breath with movements between asanas, but is also a
distinct breathing exercise on its own, usually practiced after asanas.

The art of practicing yoga helps in controlling an individual's mind, body and soul. It
brings together physical and mental disciplines to achieve a peaceful body and mind;
it helps manage stress and anxiety and keeps you relaxing. It also helps in increasing
flexibility, muscle strength and body tone.

Other physical benefits of yoga include:

▪ increased flexibility. ▪ weight reduction.
▪ increased muscle strength and ▪ cardio and circulatory health.
tone. ▪ improved athletic
▪ improved respiration, energy performance.
and vitality. ▪ protection from injury.
▪ maintaining a balanced
metabolism.

1. What is the picture all about?
2. Are there unlawful responsibilities of the individuals caught in the drug
den? What are those?
3. What can you say about the rights and protection of the youth like you in
this scenario?

What is It

In present times, most people considered

liberated individuals open in using gateway
. drugs that may be considered as windows to
unprotected sex. According to Galvez Tan et al.
in 2009, gateway drugs are initially use by the
people that may eventually lead to the abuse of
illegal drugs. Example of these are alcohol and
tobacco. When a person has alcohol intake, his
central nervous system is affected. This causes
the person to have depression making him/her
more vulnerable to doing dangerous.

To protect the people from these gateway drugs, the government created the
Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act and the Tobacco Regulation Act. Republic Act
No. 9165 also known as “Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002”, protects
citizens from the harmful effects of dangerous drugs to their physical and mental well-
being.
Based on this policy, there are unlawful acts that are subject to penalties and fines.
Examples are: importing of dangerous drugs and/or controlled precursors and
essential chemicals (narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances); selling, trading,
administering, dispensing, delivering, distributing, and transporting dangerous drugs
and/or controlled precursors and essential chemicals; maintaining a drug den, drive,
or resort ;
Included likewise is manufacturing of dangerous drugs and/or controlled precursors
and essential chemicals; manufacturing or delivery of equipment, instrument,
apparatus, or other paraphernalia for dangerous drugs and/or controlled precursors
and essential chemicals; possessing dangerous drugs, equipment, instrument,
apparatus, or other paraphernalia; possessing dangerous drugs during parties, social
gatherings or meetings; cultivating or culturing plants classified as dangerous drugs
or sources of such; and unnecessary prescribing dangerous drugs.
On the other hand, Republic Act No. 9211 also known as “Tobacco Regulation Act of
2003”, protects people from the sale, use, and advertisements of hazardous tobacco
products. To promote a healthful environment, the Act strongly bans smoking in
public places, most especially in centers of youth activities, elevators and stairwells,
fire-hazardous places, within public and private hospitals and medical clinics, airport
and other terminals, and food preparation areas. In connection with this, a designated
smoking and non-smoking area should be utilized.
More so, this Act also prohibits the sale of tobacco products to minors. In addition to,
tobacco may not be put in a vending machine, unless it verifies age, and may not be
sold within 100 meters of a school.

14
In selling tobacco, there should be proper signage that indicates target consumers.
While in advertising and promotions, the Act provisions the printing of warnings on
cigarette packs in either Filipino or English with the inclusion of health warnings.
Lastly, the government should provide programs and projects for those who shall be
affected by the passing of the Act like the tobacco growers. The Act provisions the
establishment of a cooperative and assistance program for the said people.

6
What is It

Digital Painting is . . .

➢ A process of creation when the artist uses raster or vector painting software on a
blank canvas; or originates a photo-image and transforms it from a registering
image into a product of the imagination.
➢ A process of construction when the artist originates the image and uses input
parameters or a set of rules to determine the final result.
➢ A process of play when the artist uses a push-button transformation and plays
with the input parameters until the generated image is to his or her taste.
➢ A process of selection when the artist makes a series of automated push-button
transformations and selects a generated image without changing it.

Visual characteristics

Apart from the traditional tools, the virtual painting box contains instruments that do
not exist outside the computer. The use of these instruments distinguish a digital from
a non-digital painting.
Specific digital traits include:
- Sharp, bold appearance - Perfectly smooth gradients
- Transparency - 100% monochrome color planes
- Symmetry - Absence of brushstroke
- Exact repetition - Slalom or flip forms
- Perfect circles, squares and other - Effects of automatic
shapes transformations (mirror, ripple,
- Embossing, shading and other swirl, shear, multiply etc.)
3D illusion

Origin of Digital Painting

Sketchpad – the earliest graphical manipulation program.

Created in 1963 by Ivan Sutherland, it allowed the user to
manipulate objects on a CRT (cathode ray tube). Sketchpad
eventually led to the creation of the Rand Tablet for work on
the GRAIL project in 1968, and the very first tablet created.

MacPaint - an early commercial program that allowed users

to design, draw, and manipulate objects was the program
MacPaint. The ability to freehand draw and create graphics
with this program made it the top program of its kind during
1984. It was the first personal computer with a graphical
user interface and lost much of the bulky size of its
predecessor, the Lisa.

Tablets
The idea of using a tablet to communicate directions to a
computer has been an idea since 1968 when the RAND
(Research and Development) company out of Santa Monica,
developed the RAND tablet that was used to program.

7
Kid Pix
In 1988, Craig Hickman created a paint program called Kid
Pix, which made it easier for children to use MacPaint. Kid
Pix was one of the first commercial programs to integrate
color and sound in a creative format. While the Kid Pix was
intentionally created for children, it became a useful tool for
introducing adults to the computer as well.

DIGITAL PAINTING SOFTWARE.

Corel Painter is a raster-based digital art application created to

simulate as accurately as possible the appearance and behavior of
traditional mediaassociated with drawing, painting, and printmaking.
It is intended to be used in real-time by professional digital artists as
a functional creative tool.

Adobe
Another early image manipulation program was Adobe
Photoshop. The two programs, Adobe Photoshop and
Adobe Illustrator are currently two of the top programs
used in the productions of digital paintings.

Adobe Photoshop is a raster graphics editor developed and

published by Adobe Inc. for Windows and macOS. Photoshop can
edit and compose raster images in multiple layers and supports
masks, alpha compositing and several color models including RGB,
CMYK, CIELAB, spot color, and duotone.

ArtRage is a bitmap graphics editor for digital painting created by Ambient Design
Ltd. It caters to all ages and skill levels, from children to professional artists. It is
designed to be used with a tablet PC or graphics tablet, but it can be used with a regular
mouse as well. Its mediums include tools such as oil paint, spray
paint, pencil, acrylic, and others, using relatively realistic physics to simulate actual
painting.

GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a free and open-source raster graphics
editor used for image manipulation (retouching) and image editing, free-form drawing,
transcoding between different image file formats, and more
specialized tasks.
Krita. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and Chrome
OS. It features an OpenGL-accelerated canvas, color management
support, an advanced brush engine, non-destructive layers and
masks, group-based layer management, vector artwork support and
switchable customization profiles.
The following are examples of painting tools
➢ Pencil - It helps to draw lines using click and drag the computer mouse.
➢ Paintbrush - Use this to brush a thick line on your image with different brush
shapes.
➢ Eraser - This helps to erase the area in an image by dragging the mouse
pointer over the relevant area.
➢ Fill Tool - To apply color to the foreground and
background of the selected image
➢ Pick Color - This allows the user to select an object whose
color to copy and use the color in other parts of the image.
➢ Magnifier - This tool helps the user to zoom in an out of
an image.
➢ Text - Use this to type text directly onto the picture.

Picture Analysis

Look at the pictures below and answer the questions that follow.

10
Guide Questions:
• What are the pictures all about?
• What is the importance of engaging ourselves in different types of sports?
• Why is there a need to learn different types of sports?

What is it

Individual Sports

There are certain sports, such as golf, bowling, and tennis that, for the most part, are
considered individual sports, which are sports played alone without teammates. Yes,
there are exceptions, such as the Ryder Cup in golf, in which two teams from either
side of the Atlantic Ocean compete, but often the competition is for an individual trophy.
A sample of the thousands of individual sports includes:

• Badminton • Skiing
• Bowling • Snowboarding
• Boxing • Surfing
• Cycling • Swimming
• Figure skating • Track and field
• Golf • Wrestling

Skills

There are thousands of individual sports, and the skill requirements for each vary
greatly; however, there are certain skills that apply to most individual athletes. Most
have high levels of cardiovascular fitness to allow for long hours of practice and play.
Most have well-toned muscles and are flexible.

11
One major advantage of competing in an individual sport is that the athlete can
progress at her own pace to improve skills. The skills she needs are more mental than
physical. She needs autonomy, self-discipline, focused thinking, and passion. She must
work on a specific skill over and over until it is mastered. She is able to practice as
early or late as she wants. She gets to take all the credit for winning, but she is on her
own and can blame no one but herself for any lackluster performances.

Critical Elements

Individual sports also allow athletes to aim for personal goals without worrying about
hurting the team. For example, in distance running, an athlete will commonly shoot for
a personal best (known as a PB) several times per year. In fact, individual athletes are
often said to be competing against themselves. They do have competitors to beat, but
they also attempt to improve on their previous best performances as well.

There are two basic types of motivation. They are external motivation and intrinsic
motivation. External motivation comes from someone else or involves gaining a
reward. Examples of external motivation include a coach yelling at you to do pushups,
winning a medal, or a parent telling you to clean your room. Intrinsic
motivation literally means that the desire comes from within. This is a trait that many
individual sport's athletes possess. Examples include deciding to run a personal best
in a 5K race or attempting to qualify for a big tournament. In individual sports, there
are no teammates to please or to put peer pressure upon you, as the pressure comes
from yourself.

Individual Sports

Tennis - Although its origins may be traced to the thirteenth century (according to
some historians, to a much earlier date), it is usually held that 1874 marks the
beginning of the modern game of tennis. Three years later the All England Croquet
Club, located in Wimbledon (a London suburb), held a tournament that was so
successful that it was decided to make this an annual event. The first "national"
tournament in the United States was held in 1876.

Badminton is often called "the world's fastest racket sport." Evidence of early forms of
the game may be found in China before the first century B.C. E. "Shuttlecock" was
widely played in parts of England in the fourteenth century. The modern game dates
from the late 1800's. The first "laws" (rules) of badminton were published in India in
1877. Badminton has been part of the curriculum at Berkeley since the 1910s. It is a
popular form of physical activity for numerous students today, as is racquetball (a game
invented in 1949 on a Connecticut handball court) and handball (whose origins may be
found in several early cultures where a ball that rebounds off a wall is struck with the
hand). Modern handball is usually dated to the founding of the Gaelic Athletic
Association in 1884.

What I Can Do

4 Helpful footwork exercises

Badminton is one of the sports which require the most endurance. These exercises are
aimed at helping to improve your fitness levels.

12
1. Jog Try to jog at least 3 days a week for 30 minutes on end. Endurance is a key
factor in badminton and the more stamina you have, the better you more you are to
constantly retrieve shots without tiring out.

2. Skip Skip for at least 10 minutes a day. This will train you to be more comfortable
on your toes, helping to keep your feet light and nimble.

3. Shadow Playing Practice shadow playing to allow yourself to visualize how to

move till it becomes instinctual. If you can master this, you won't have to consciously
worry about the footwork needed in real game situations.

4. Silent Footwork You can measure your quality of footwork by observing how
little noise your feet make when you move and land. The lesser the sound, the better
you are at absorbing the pressure, weight of your body and keeping your balance.

What’s New

▪ Look at the picture, then answer the questions that follow.

What is your idea about the picture?

• Have you encountered fraternity and sorority? How?
• Did someone invite you to join these groups? If yes? How?
• Do you know any law/s related to these kinds of organization?

What is It

In our present time, social groups including fraternities and sororities, as well as
youth gangs are gaining fame and socially identified. Because of their “alleged” prestige
and prime, more teens are motivated to join. But some of these groups, hazing is an
option to test an “applicant’s” willingness, loyalty, and commitment. Despite that hazing
is very dangerous, and proven to have killed many lives, it is still a part of these
organization membership policy. To protect the youth and its people, the government
created Republic Act No. 8049 or the Anti-Hazing Law. This Act penalizes those who
will go too far during initiation rites wherein the applicant also known as “neophyte” is
subjected to severe physical and emotional pain, suffering or even death.

Republic Act No. 8049 defines Hazing is an initiation rite or practice as a

prerequisite for admission into membership in a fraternity, sorority or organization by
placing the recruit, neophyte or applicant in some embarrassing or humiliating
situations such as forcing him to do menial, silly, foolish and other similar tasks or
activities or otherwise subjecting him to physical, emotional or psychological suffering
or injury.

Within this Act, the school must be notified in seven (7) days before the conduct
of such initiation. If then allowed, the head of the school or organization must assign
at least two (2) representatives of the school or organization to see to it that no physical
harm of any kind to the applicant or neophyte. More so, parents are also responsible
in monitoring their child organizational participations and activity.

Penalty for the officers and members of the fraternity, sorority or organization who
actually participated in the infliction of harm:

15
▪ Maximum: is if it causes death, rape, sodomy or mutilation of the member equivalent
to penalty of reclusion perpetual (life imprisonment)

▪ Minimum: 4 years, 2 months and one day to 6 years if the hazing victim sustained
physical injuries which do not prevent him from engaging in his habitual activity or
work nor require medical attendance

In addition, the owner of the place where hazing is conducted shall be liable when
he has actual knowledge of the hazing conducted therein but failed to take any action
to prevent the same from occurring. Also, the school authorities including faculty
members who consent to the hazing or who have actual knowledge thereof, but failed
to take any action to prevent the same from occurring shall be punished as accomplices

What is it

Jazz is a kind of music in which improvisation is an important part. In most jazz

performances, a player plays solos that shows up on-the-spot and requires considerable
skill. New Orleans, Louisiana USA is the cradle of Jazz music in the early twentieth
century. It was an offshoot of the music of African slaves who migrated to America.
Africans use this type of music to recall their nostalgic past in their home country as well
as to voice out their sentiments on their desperate condition at that time.
Characteristics of Jazz Music
Distinctive rhythms: Traditional jazz rhythms are known for its syncopated
rhythms, often pulled from Afro-Cuban traditions.
Harmonic sophistication: Jazz music uses many chord progressions and
many musical scales.
Improvisation: Perhaps more than anything else, improvisation is one of the
major characteristics of jazz music. Almost all types of this genre follow these
characteristics. All members of a jazz band, from players of lead instruments to
the rhythm section to lead vocalists, may be called upon to improvise a jazz tune.

5
What is it

Video Technology is a technology that involves the recording and playing back of
moving pictures and sound.
Video has become the most popular type of media out there. With most of the
world making a shift from traditional media to online media, the online video market
became an attractive place for both users and marketers. Many factors have contributed
to that fact, but one thing is undeniable — video content is dominating the world right
now.

BRIEF HISTORY OF VIDEO TECHNOLOGY

Beginning of Cinema. The beginning of cinema was a quest to find the right technology
to shoot continuous images, and the Lumiere brothers hit on a solution in the early part
of the 20th century.

After this cinema became a very popular pastime, with 65%

of people going to the cinema at least once a week in the
30’s, and many movies from the so-called “golden age” of
Hollywood still hold a special place in many of our hearts.

RISE OF TELEVISION. The next revolution in video

technology came with the rise of the television as a commodity
for mass consumption. The subsequent rise in color television
meant that it was becoming increasingly popular to sit around
the box and watch important events and the latest TV shows,
such as when “ man landed in the moon for the first time
in 1969, which was watched by 600 million people.

FLAT SCREENS. Home entertainment video technology

continued to improve in the second part of the 20th century,
and in the 90’s, the era of bulky and cumbersome TVs and
“slapping your box on the side to fix the aerial” was over. Flat
screen TVs were born.

LAPTOPS AND THE IPADS. Another revolution came in the

early 2000s, with the rise of the laptop and the invention of
the iPAD and the iPhone (which was first released in 2007).
This changed the way we can watch, as it enabled us to
watch TV and movies on the go.

STREAMING TAKES OVER. Now it is the era of Netflix

and streaming. We ‘binge watch’ shows, unlike back in the
day when we waited religiously for episodes of our favorite
show, and we ‘Netflix and Chill’ with our dates rather than
going to the cinema.

The future of video technology is clearly going to be

fascinating. Video Walls are a new way in which we can
watch and engage with content, and streaming services are
continually changing the way in which we engage with,
watch, and even think about media and art. The future of
media is going to be exciting.

Many articles show the importance of video technology in educational institutes

for imparting knowledge in various fields including media, history, arts and medical

6
sciences, and gives detailed information about numerous video formats. It is also proven
to be very useful in marketing campaigns while others create videos as their past time
to share their skills or talents to inspire others.

EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES

Online education has provided unprecedented learning opportunities to people all

over the world. Lectures and lessons can be uploaded to websites in written or video
form, making information more accessible.

It creates a more engaging sensory experience than using print materials alone.
It provides a go-to resource that can be watched from anywhere with an internet
connection, and are accessible on a multitude of devices including laptops, tablets,
and smartphones.
It increases knowledge retention.
They increase proficiency in digital literacy and communication.
Increases student engagement.
It enables teachers to create a flipped classroom, or “blended” learning
environment.
It facilitates remote learning opportunities.

MEDICAL/SCIENTIFIC PURPOSES
Another extremely valuable use of today’s video technology is that of imaging videos in
the fields of medicine and science.
Helps in the early recognition of diseases.
Uses to create and record visual images of a patient’s anatomy to diagnose and
treat diseases and injuries through the use of MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
and CT scans (Computer Tomography).
Ultrasound tests or sonograms translate sound waves bouncing off physical
objects into images that can be studied-whether a baby developing in the womb
(in 2D, 3D, and 4D options), growths or malformations inside the body,
structural flaws in buildings, as well as objects in outer space, underground,
and deep in the ocean.
Use of gigantic telescopes to see into the far reaches of our universe.

SOCIAL MEDIA PURPOSES

Another tremendously powerful and innovative field that digital technology has
revolutionized is that of creating and presenting videos. The explosion of social media in
recent decades has provided a new platform for video materials targeting the netizens
today.
Can be used for advertisements or campaigns
Video tutorials {(recipes, dances etc.)
Video/music streaming
For recording/capturing live performances
For making documentaries

What’s New

➢ What are the things that you do in order to maintain your level of fitness during
this pandemic time?

Hip-Hop aerobics is a workout that uses choreographed steps and aerobics

movements as you dance to hip-hop music. Hip- Hop aerobics is a form of exercise that
blends dance moves with strengthening exercises. Most of the time, this sort of aerobics
is designed to feel more like dancing than exercising. It is usually paired with fast-tempo
hip-hop music, and incorporates many of the moves common to the dance style. The goal
is not to learn routines or put on performances, however. People participate in hip-hop
aerobics in order to get a good cardiovascular workout, and to tone muscles in the arms,
legs, and abdominal region.
Most of the moves in hip-hop aerobics derive directly from the dance style of the
same name. Hip-hop is a decidedly American dance style that draws from elements of
African, Latin American, and Asian traditional dance. Steps are typically very fast, and
the full body is involved in creating the central dance expression. This can involve
anything from gyrations to headstands and arm waves.
In aerobics, the main goal is usually to capitalize on the body-moving moves of
hip-hop and repeat them in sequence such that muscles get fatigued and built up.
Instructors essentially convert dance moves into exercise routines such that participants
feel like they are in a dance class or night club rather than at the gym. The addition of
hip-hop music usually adds to the ambiance.
Hip-hop music is very fast paced, and often incorporates elements of rap
recitations. Dance and exercise move usually try to follow the music’s tempo with
clapping hands, pulsing elbows, and jumps. Songs often flow seamlessly into each other,
creating a more or less continuous workout experience. Most hip-hop aerobics sessions
are designed to last for about an hour, but much of this is up to the individual instructor.
Benefits of Hip-Hop Aerobics

• calorie and fat burning workout • encourage confidence

• improve coordination, flexibility, and agility • develop social skills and values
• increase aerobic fitness • promotes a positive mindset
• improve stamina and endurance • improve mental functioning

Online Games

An online game is a video game that is either partially or primarily played through the
Internet or any other computer network available. Online games are universal on
modern gaming platforms, including PCs, consoles and mobile devices, and span many
genres, including first-person shooters, strategy games and massively multiplayer
online role-playing games .

Many online games create their own online communities, while other games, especially
social games, integrate the players' existing real-life communities.

Online games have attracted players from a variety of ages, nationalities, and
occupations. The online game content can also be studied in the scientific
field, especially gamers' interactions within virtual societies in relation to the behavior
and social phenomena of everyday life. As in other cultures, the community has
developed a range of slang words or phrases that can be used for communication in or outside
of games.

History of Online Games. Commercial games followed in the next decade, with Islands
of Kesmai, the first commercial online role-playing game, debuting in 1984, as well as
more graphical games, such as the MSX LINKS action games in 1986, the flight
simulator Air Warrior in 1987, and the Famicom Modem's online Go game in
1987. Entering into the 2000s, the cost of technology, servers and the Internet has

6
dropped so far that fast Internet was commonplace, which led to previously unknown
genres like massively multiplayer online games becoming well-known. For
example, World of Warcraft dominated much of the decade. Separately, a new type of
online game came to popularity alongside World of Warcraft, Defense of the Ancients
which introduced the multiplayer online battle arena format. DotA, a community mod
based on Warcraft III, gained in popularity as interest in World of Warcraft waned, but
since the format was tied to the Warcraft property, others began to develop their own
MOBAs, including Heroes of Newerth, League of Legends, and Dota 2. Blizzard
Entertainment, the owner of Warcraft property, released their own take on the MOBA
genre with Heroes of the Storm, emphasizing on numerous original heroes from
Warcraft III and other Blizzard's franchises. By the early 2010s, the genre has become
a big part of the esports category. In the late 2010s, the battle royale game format
became widely popular with the release of Player Unknown's Battlegrounds, Fortnite
Battle Royale, and Apex Legends.

Platforms

Console Gaming. A game console, video game console, or console is a gaming box or
device that is primarily designed to play games that connects to a TV. For example, the
Famicom, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Wii, and Wii U are all examples
of consoles.

Browser Games. A browser game is a video game that is played via the World Wide Web
using a web browser. Browser games can be run using standard web technologies or
browser plug-ins. The creation of such games often involves the use of standard web
technologies as a front and other technologies to provide the back end. Browser games
include all types of video games and can be single player or multiplayer.

Types of interactions
Player versus environment (PvE) - PvE is a term used in online games, particularly
MMORPGs and other role-playing video games, to refer to fighting computer-controlled
opponents.
Player versus player (PvP) - PvP is a term broadly used to describe any game, or aspect
of a game, where players compete against each other rather than against computer-
controlled opponents.
Online Games Classification

1. First-person shooter game (FPS) - is a video game

genre centered on gun and other weapon-based combat
in a first-person perspective; that is, the player
experiences the action through the eyes of
the protagonist.

2. Real-time strategy game (RTS) - is a sub-genre

of strategy video games in which the game does not
progress incrementally in turns. Real-time strategy
games allow for all players to simultaneously play the
game in "real-time". This is contrasted by turn-based
strategy (TBS) games, where players must take turns to
play. The term "real-time strategy" was coined by Brett
Sperry to market Dune II in the early 1990s.

3. Massively multiplayer online game (MMO) -

A massively multiplayer online game (MMOG, or more
commonly, MMO) is an online game with large numbers
of players, often hundreds or thousands, on the same
server.[1] MMOs usually feature a huge, persistent open
world, although some games differ. These games can be
found for most network-capable platforms, including
the personal computer, video game console, or smartphones and other mobile
devices.

7
4. Multiplayer online battle arena game (MOBA) - Multiplayer online battle arena is
a subgenre of strategy video games in which each player controls a single character
with a set of unique abilities that improve over the course of a game and which
contribute to the team's overall strategy. This type of multiplayer online video games
originated as a subgenre of real-time strategy, though MOBA players usually do not
construct buildings or units. Moreover, there are examples of MOBA games that are
not considered real-time strategy games, such as Smite, and Paragon. The genre is
seen as a fusion of real-time strategy, role-playing, and action games.
5. Battle Royale games - Battle Royale games involve
dozens to hundreds of players, who start with minimal
equipment and then must eliminate all other opponents
while avoiding being trapped outside of a shrinking «safe
area», with the winner being the last player or team
alive.
6. MUD – (originally multi-user dungeon, with later
variants multi-user dimension and multi-user
domain) is a multiplayer real-time virtual world,
usually, text-based. MUDs combine elements of
role-playing games, hack and slash, player versus
player, interactive fiction, and online chat. Players can
read or view descriptions of rooms, objects, other
players, non-player characters, and actions performed in
the virtual world. Players typically interact with each
other and the world by typing commands that resemble a natural language.
