Overview
This activity synthesizes the need for students to understand on how to separate mixtures
and to conceptualize how to design an effective and well -ordered laboratory procedures to
achieve a specific result. This will help you synthesize previous learning about mixtures and
solutions by applying your understanding of these concepts to a novel task where you
previously know that dry substances are mixed together and must then be separated.

Learning Objectives: At the end of two hours, the students are expected to:
a) describe what are mixtures;
b) separate mixtures considering the physical characteristics of matter such as particle
size;
c) decide what filter materials to be used which are available also in the home to separate
mixtures.
d) design and implement a procedure that can separate out the materials given in the
activity.
e) show documentation of the activity (materials used ,actual performance of the
activity ,products)

Materials:
 Gravel
 Diatomaceous earth/dry fine soil/look an alternative
 Sodium chloride
Developmental questions:
1. What is a mixture?
 Mixture is the combination of two or more substances in which substances mix
their physical properties or chemically combined. There are two types of mixture;
heterogeneous and homogeneous mixture. Both mixtures can be easily
separated through physical changes.

2. How do you separate mixtures? Base your answer on this given activity.
 Doing this activity, I separated the mixtures through filtration and evaporation. I
used the filtration method in separating the salt and soil from the gravel and
separating salt from the soil (by pouring water into the mixture). Then
evaporation method for separating salt from the water.

3. Why is particle size important?


 Size is important because it is an example of a physical property of a substance.
Therefore, we can separate mixtures through their particle sizes (e.g. huge
particles from small).

4. Did the mesh filter allow you to separate the diatomaceous earth/fine soil?
 Yes. I was able to separate the fine soil since it has a very tiny particles that
goes through the mesh filter.

5. Why is the order of filtering important?


 The order of filtering is important because it allows the substances to be
separated in a proper way. Separating substances through its particle sizes
needs to be in an order. For example, in this activity, I first filtrated gravel from
salt and soil since gravel has larger size than the other substances. In order to
separate salt from soil, I identified their physical properties which salt is soluble
by water compared to soil. Therefore, I filtered the soil from the solution of water
and salt.

6. Document your activity by posting photos on the steps you did in this activity.

Procedures:

Step 1: I gathered the materials available in our surroundings.

Gravel: 25 grams Fine soil: 25 grams Salt: 25 grams Mesh Filter


1 cup of water Cloth Containers Cooking Pot

Step 2: I mixed gravel, salt and soil into a container.

Step 3: In filtration method, first, I separated gravel from other substances by using a mesh filter.

Step 4: In order to separate salt from soil, I needed to dissolve salt with water. After the salt was
dissolved, it is now mixed with water as a solution. Then, I filtered the soil from the solution using
a cloth.
Step 5: It’s time to separate salt from water so I conducted an evaporation method. Evaporation
works in which water converts into gas leaving the salt in the pot.

Step 6: I placed all the products of the experiment to see the results if they are really separated
from each other.
