Movie Review of “Ketika Cinta Bertasbih 2” and Explanation

1.Synopsis of The Film and Review

The film begins when Khoirul Azzam arrives at his home town after graduating from the
University of Al Azhar at Egypt.However,Azzam struggles finding a job Not to mention the
scorn neighbor who thought that Al-Azhar University graduates automatically become kiai, or a
great scholar. With a background of experience in entrepreneurship at Egypt, Azzam was not
discouraged to build his own business and built a food stall called “bakso Cinta”.Azam also
struggles with marriage and difficulty to find a soul mate.And is always alluded by his mother.

The story continues with the wedding of Anna Althafunnisa a woman/solehah whom
Azzam loved and Furqan Andi Hasan,Azzam best friend. While with Eliana which clearly put
her heart he could not accept, as he still longed for a Solehah/Muslim woman.Azzam will also
face some obstacles such as his mother died in an accident.

Conflict occurs between Anna and Furqan ,when Anna knows that her husband is
currently affected by the HIV virus, which ends with Anna asks for a divorce/Talaq.In the end
the film Azzam and Anna are married as Anna Althafunnisa father offered to Azzam to be his
wife.The moral of the story is about marriage,matchmaking,love and so on.It also observe the
process of talaq, requirements of marriage in Islamic teaching(mahr,consent,witness,etc) and
status of guardians.Scene of the marriage akad or ijab qabul in this film is only shown visually
only. Such as instances when Kyai Lutfi wed his daughter Anna with Azzam is very sudden, but
all condition are met at the time, witnesses, Mahr etc. all exist at the time of the marriage.

In my opinion,this movie lacks conflict and it is predictable.However,the message of

marriage,moral(not shown a lot), and selection of partner is delivered.And the purposes of
marriages as well.As the film main plot of Azzam finding a partner,what is Azzam purpose,what
made him urge to get married,and why he do not want to marry Eliana?.This questions will be
answered bellow.
 2.Explanation of The Film

The choice of a partner should be the one with the most "taqwa" (piety). The prophet
recommended the suitors see each other before going through with marriage. It is unreasonable
for two people to be thrown together and be expected to relate and be intimate when they know
nothing of each other. The couple are permitted to look at each other with a critical eye and not a
lustful one.In this case why Azzam doesn’t want to marry Eliana because he scared that Eliana is
not suitable for him as he longed for a Solehah and to avoid a divorce.Thats why he choose Anna
as her wife to create a Islamic household and to lead his children to uphold Islamic
teachings.Because Azzam trust Anna that she will be a good wife and fulfill her obligation as
wife and to lead or care the children in Islamic ways.

Talaq is also seen in this movie when Anna and Furqan divorce ,Talaq or divorce is
considered an unlawful act or haram in Islam, except when circumstances force and there is no
other way except to talaq, then it halal.So,Talaq in this movie is considered halal as Furqan is
infected with HIV virus(later is proven not infected) because he cannot fulfill his
obligation(fulfilling his wife pleasure) as a husband ,then it is permitted to talaq.However,Furqan
should’ve not married Anna as he knew that he is infected before marrying her.As one of
Islamic purposes of marriage is to To provide spiritual and legal foundation of the family that
justifies Talaq .Talaq is stated in Al-Baqaroh verse 229 states “Talaq is twice. Then, either keep
[her] in an acceptable manner or release [her] with good treatment. And it is not lawful for you to
take anything of what you have given them unless both fear that they will not be able to keep
[within] the limits of Allah . But if you fear that they will not keep [within] the limits of Allah ,
then there is no blame upon either of them concerning that by which she ransoms herself. These
are the limits of Allah , so do not transgress them. And whoever transgresses the limits of Allah -
it is those who are the wrongdoers”.Hence,the purpose is to create a house hold based on Islamic
sharia as the wife and the husband must fulfill their obligation of their roles in the household.

Azzam urge to get married is because to fulfill his needs and pleasure but avoiding to
commit adultery. Through Marriage, the conjugal relationship between a man and a woman
becomes lawful. It provides a legitimate outlet for recreation as well as procreation. Islam
regards sex as natural and good, but restricts it to the partners of marriage so as to ensure the
responsibility for its consequences, "And of His Signs is this: He created for you mates from
yourself that you might find rest in them, and He ordained between you love and mercy. Lo,
therein indeed are portents for folk who reflect"(Quran 30:21). In that film we have seen the
requirements of marriage in Islamic teaching but only visually no futher explanation of condition
of marriage islam in the film.
