water

air

Why does the air bubble appear silvery?

A. Total internal reflection occurs when light rays are getting into the water from above the water surface.
B. Total internal reflection occurs when light rays are getting out of the water from below the water
surface.
C. Total internal reflection occurs when light rays are getting into the air bubble.
D. Total internal reflection occurs when light rays are getting out of the air bubble.

Section B (18 marks)

9. A diver looks upwards under sea water. His eyes are 6 m below the surface. The refractive index of sea water
is 1.38. His view is squeezed into an inverted cone as shown.

6m

(a) Briefly explain why  is equal to the critical angle of sea water. Hence, find angle . (3 marks)

(b) The diameter of the cone D remains the same even if the diver dives deeper into the sea water because
the critical angle of it remains the same. Briefly explain if the statement is correct or not. (2 marks)
