Course Name: Quantum Mechanics-I Maximum Marks: 15
Course Code: PH405 Total Time: 1 Hour

Note: Attempt any five questions (3 marks each). Your answer should be brief and to the
point.

Q.1 (i) If the walls of the one-dimensional box (infinite potential) are suddenly removed, the
energy of the particle becomes [1]
(a) Quantized (b) Non-quantized (c) Infinite (d) Zero
(ii) If the solution of a time-independent Schrodinger equation 𝜓(𝑟) is a constant, then find
the relation between total energy (E) and potential energy (V). [2]

Q.2 State “True or False” with a brief justification for your answer.
(i) Heisenberg’s principle completely denies the possibility of dynamical variables having
definite values in a state. [1.5]
(ii) Although the quantum mechanical wavefunction can not be measured itself, it is very
useful for finding the other physical quantities. [1.5]

Q.3 Why should a wavefunction be finite and continuous? Check whether 𝜓(𝑥) = 𝐴 sec 𝑘𝑥
2
and 𝜓(𝑥) = 𝐴𝑒 −𝑥 for 𝑥 > 0 are acceptable wavefunctions or not?

Q.4 Understand the figure given below and qualitatively discuss the important results
obtained for case (i) and case (ii) (Derivation is not required). Name one practical
problem where these results are applicable.

Q.5 Explained the importance of “Quantum Degeneracy”. In a three-dimensional infinite box
2
14ℎ
the energy of particle in a state is 𝐸 = 8𝑚𝑎 2 , find the degeneracy in this state and also
mention which state is it in the energy level diagram?

Q.6 Define the term “Expectation value”. Find the expectation value of the momentum
< 𝑝𝑥 > of a particle moving in a one dimensional potential well (0 < 𝑥 < 𝐿) with
infinite height. [Use the standard wavefunction 𝜓(𝑥) obtained for this problem]

Q.7 Write the Schrodinger equations with general solutions for a finite potential well for its
different regions. Briefly explain the qualitative differences between the results of finite
and infinite potential wells of same dimensions (Derivation is not required).
