Process Control (IV) GA Assignment

Date: 21st November 2022 Marks

Minimum Pass Mark to achieve the

GA is Level 3
- COMPETENT (according to the
attached rubric)

This assignment is designed specifically to assess the required Graduate Attribute (GA) for this
subject. The GA being assessed is GA9: Independent learning: Demonstrate competence to
engage in independent learning through well-developed learning skills. The assignment is
designed to test your ability to gather new information, process the information and make
decisions for properly evaluated situations. It also assists in developing hands on experience
using a PID controller and the effects of the main tuning constants on the performance of the
controller by visual simulation of the processes on a computer.

Problem Statement:

1. Select a process that you have studied in a previous course in chemical engineering
such as; heat exchangers, separation process and reactors then describe the objectives
that should be associated with each of the seven categories of control objectives
described in Chapter 2 of the study guide. A sketch of the process is required. Note,
do not use any of the examples covered in class.

2. (a) List and discuss four major differences between Proportional Integral Derivative
(PID) and Programming logical controllers (PLC).

2. (b) Based on the PID or PLC, identify 2 Chemical process industries in South Africa
were any can be used/employed. Take note, this should be based on the advantages and
disadvantages that they offer.

3. The Chemical Engineering laboratory in S5, level 0, has 3 Bytronic process control
units (temperature, flow and pressure) that use Labview as an interface to interact with
the control units. The unit allows for the following concepts to be investigated:
proportional control; proportional integral control; saturation and integral windup; three
term or PID control; Ziegler / Nichols tuning; temperature, pressure and flow control
loops; Bode plots; etc. According to the table below, conduct the specific task given in
the user manuals:

Requirements:
1. Individual typed report with a cover page, introduction, full discussions of the new 4IR
technologies with the examples chosen and the experimental work objectives,
calculations and discussions. Use proper Harvard referencing methods.
2. The report must be submitted through Turnitin by the due date.
3. Turnitin penalties will apply as stipulated in the learner guide.
4. No late assignments will be accepted.
5. A subminimum of Competent (level 3) is required in the report to achieve the GA. Failure
to achieve this will require a resubmission of the assignment, where a penalty will apply.
6. The assignment mark captured on ITS could be lower than level 3 due to penalties. The
final assignment mark, incorporating the penalties will contribute towards the course
mark.
GA9: Independent learning: Demonstrate competence to engage in independent learning through well-developed learning skills.
