Experiment 6.1

Purpose: To study the role of water in showing the properties of acidity.

Statement of the problem: Is water necessary for an acid to exhibit acidic properties?
Hypothesis: Water is needed by acids to show the properties of acidity.
Variables:
(a) manipulated : Presence of water
(b) react : Color change on blue litmus paper
(c) constant : Type of acid
Ingredients: Oxalic acid solid, C2H2O4, distilled water and blue litmus paper
Apparatus: Test tubes and test tube racks
Procedure:
1. Put a solid spatula of oxalic acid, C2H2O4 into a test tube.
2. Insert a piece of dry blue litmus paper into the test tube.
3. Note any color changes on the blue litmus paper. Record observations.
4. Then, add 2.0 cm3 of distilled water and shake.
5. Observe any color change on the blue litmus paper. Record observations.
Results:
Kandungan Pemerhatian
Pepejal asid oksalik, C2H2O4
Pepejal asid oksalik, C2H2O4 + air
