ENGLISH PRACTICAL EXAM

SPEAKING – STORY TELLING

NARRATIVE TEXT (FAIRYTALES, FOLKTALES OR FABLES)

Use visual media and technology which become powerful tool that can transform the way we
tell stories. You can combine your performance with music, pictures, sound effects and others,
so you’ll have an interactive and interesting one.

Exam techniques:

 Each student prepares one title of story related to the topic of narrative text. Have a different
story among classmates.
 Print out the script of your stories and hand it to judges on the day.
 Perform one by one in front of judges for 3-5 minutes. No reading script, remember, the best
story teller knows the story by heart.
 Bring out the best of you. Use any properties/media/visual tools to enhance your act. You
can dress up in accordance to the characters, or you can make a puppet/doll, use ppt slides to
show pictures or video, use background with your hand drawing picture, or any else.
 Engage your audience. Great storytelling requires you to connect with your audience, but
much of how you captivate your audience depends upon the mode of storytelling you’re
using. Eye to eye contact.
 Practice telling stories. Take the opportunity to tell stories before performing it in front of
judges to your friends, relatives or neighbors.

Storytelling rubric:

 Content (30%): Knows the story well, has obviously practiced telling the story, uses no
notes, speaks with confidence, share a vision and sum a lesson-learned of story.
 Voice (20%):Speaks with an appropriate volume. Employs clear enunciation. Uses non-
monotonous, vocal; storyteller's natural voice is differentiated from character voices.
 Face/Body/Gesture(20%): Expressively uses non-verbal communication to clarify the
meaning of the text.Concentration is clear.Eye contact with audience is engaging.
Storytellers are comfortable, relaxed and confidence.
 Duration (15%): min 3 minutes – max 5 minutes.
 Props or visual tools (15%): Outstanding and creative use of props, props are appropriate
and out of the box.

Judges / teachers reserve the rights to ask students to repeat the performance on the other day if it
doesn’t meet the criteria. The decision is absolute. So be serious in planning this practical exam.
