BORUSAN MANNESMANN BORU
Borusan Mannessmann Boru commenced its operations at Sefakoy in 1958, and in 1998 the company established
a partnership with one of Europe’s leading industrial establishments, Mannesmannröhren - Werke AG by joining
its activities in Turkey. The companies were united under the title “Borusan Mannesmann Boru” in 2004.

Borusan Mannesmann Boru; now operating with five mills, four in Turkey and one in Italy, with a total production
capacity of 925.000 tons, is one of the five largest steel welded pipe producer companies in Europe.

Borusan Mannesmann Boru produces its SAW spiral linepipes in its Izmit plant with a current total capacity of
200.000 tons between 14 inch to 100 inch diameter for oil, gas, water pipelines as well as piling applications.

The Company has wide experince and wide range of track records in oil and gas pipeline applications both in
Turkey and International markets with high grade API standards. (pls see major reference list.) Borusan Mannesmann
Boru is proven by its Customers as not only a pipe producer but also its Customer’s “total solution provider” and
“reliable partner”.

Customer Segmentation – Projects Segment

Borusan Mannesmann Boru running the Six Sigma methodology, recently (as a result of a Six Sigma Project)
segmented its activities according to Customer needs. Within this concept, Projects Segment, specialised in Pipeline
Solutions/Contracts (providing SSAW large diameter and ERW pipe solutions) and offers its Customers specific
project contract solutions by also sharing International Customers local Country risks.

Spirally welded pipe is not only
an alternative to
longitudinally welded pipe,
but additionally has some advantages.
Advantages of Spirally Welded Pipes
No calibration process (cold expanding or roll sizing) is necessary. The diameter tolerance of pipe end & body of
a joint is small, particularly with regard to ovality.

The mechanical properties are present in the base material. Since any cold expansion reduces the material's
ductility, the spiral-weld pipe has a higher safety margin.

When carrying out field cold-bending, it is not necessary to take the weld seam position into account.

There is a favourable orientation of the weld seam and of the strip's direction of rolling relative to the direction
of principal stress.
Spirally welded pipes have been used
all over the world for high-pressure
pipeline projects, which have confirmed
their high quality and suitability
as high strength steel pipes.
The Submerged Arc Welding Process
The submerged arc welding (SAW)
process is widely used for welding thick
sections, yet it can be applied to plate as
thin as approximately 4 mm.

The principle of the spiral pipe production

is simply bending the steel strip spirally
into cylindrical pipe shape and ultimately
welding edges together. The occurrence
of weld seam step by step can be seen
in the next figure.

In spirally welded pipe production

process, very impressive capabilities can
be achieved for high rates of travel by
using multiple electrodes in two-run
technique. The high currents,
obtained by multiple electrodes,
generate considerable heat
which leads to deep penetration
of the base metal. In Borusan
Mannesmann Boru, remarkable
control always be exercised over
the contour of the deposit and
extent of the penetration into the
base metal. Both of these factors have
important effect on the chemical
composition and metallurgical properties
of the weld metal.
