5. What are the current issues and concern in the agriculture and fishery in the Philippines?
Philippine’s Agricultural sector has a lot of issues and concerned faced, some of the common
problems encountered by rice farmers were: high cost of inputs, low price of palay, lack of capital, labor
problem, lack of postharvest facilities, pest and diseases and irrigation system. Another issue is the
climate change that is affecting their farming process and to harvest on time. Purchasing of the
commodities during calamities is more in demand. The significant costs of power or electricity that is
shouldering by our farmers are a big problem.
Agricultural sector has been beset with persistent challenges resulting in low farm incomes, low
rural employment, lack of food security, and meager agricultural competitiveness. Agriculture managed
to grow by 0.5 percent in the second quarter of 2020. Production in crops and fisheries recorded
increases while livestock and poultry posted declines. Crops registered a 5.0 percent growth in
production. It shared 53.7 percent of the total agricultural output.

Above all the main problem of agriculture of our country is that the National Government of the
Philippines itself has no action or weak response and does not value the sector of agriculture and
fishery. They are not taking any action to meet the basic needs of our farmers who are feeding the
Philippines and tending to raise livestock, especially now that the Philippines is plagued by ASF or
African Swine Fever and the cost of pork. Our country's own government is bringing down our
agricultural sector, instead of encouraging them to continue farming, supporting and guiding our
farmers they are one of the reasons why the former farm lands are now one of the commercial building
they are pretending to be. sell it at a cheap price (personal interest), not even giving value to the fatigue
and illnesses of the local farmers but as if our government is just asking for what they have worked for
because instead of providing machinery to help them, give investment, help sell high value yields the
opposite happens. Whether we admit it or not, the Philippine government is to blame for why our
country's agriculture is gradually declining.
