SPECIFIC HEAT OF A LIQUID
Specific heat of a liquid is measure of the heat energy needed to produce an increase in
temperature. Water has a specific heat of 4.184 J/𝑔0 C. The higher the specific heat, the
more resistant the substance is to changes in temperature. Most metals have a very low
specific heat which makes them easily increase in temperature and decrease in
temperature

OBJECTIVE:
To observe the characteristics of liquids based on their specific heat

MATERIALS:
Cotton, typewriting paper , timer , acetone , ethyl alcohol ,isopropyl alcohol and water

PROCEDURE:
1. Wet a cotton in water
2. In a piece of clean paper , wet the entire paper using cotton balls
3. Record how long it will take the water to evaporate completely
4. Repeat procedure using acetone , ethyl alcohol and isopropyl alcohol
5. Make a bar graph of the liquid’s specific heat and the time of evaporation
6. Document each process

IV. QUESTIONS:
1. Which of the four liquids evaporates the fastest ? slowest?

Acetone vaporized most quickly because it has the lowest intermolecular

interactions, while in water, it has the highest intermolecular interactions
and the slowest evaporation.

2. Make a generalization on the time of evaporation of the liquid to the specific heat

The time it takes for a liquid to evaporate increases as the specific heat
increases, but when the specific heat is lower, the time it takes for a liquid
to evaporate decreases. As you can see from the table, it describes the
direct proportionality between specific heat and the amount of time it takes
for a liquid to evaporate.
3. How would you relate the concept of specific heat in everyday living

The idea of specific heat, which establishes the minimum amount of heat
required to change a material’s temperature, helps us understand how
various materials warm up or cool down rapidly at a given temperature,
which is highly helpful in our daily lives. In daily life, specific heat is
employed to swiftly warm up materials having low specific heat
capabilities. The temperature varies dramatically even when only a little
amount of heat is applied. Because it heats up quickly with little heat, it is
also a very useful material for culinary items like frying pans, pots, kettles,
and so forth.

V. GENERALIZATION:

In conclusion, after the experiment, I learned that the data I collected

showed that acetone had the lowest specific heat and lowest intermolecular
interactions, whereas water had the highest intermolecular. Liquid (water) must
be heated using a lot of heat because hydrogen connections between molecules
must be broken down. In other words, the quantity of heat needed to raise a
substance’s temperature by one degree Celsius per gram is known as its specific
heat capacity. Therefore, water has a high specific heat capacity.
As the specific heat rises, the time it takes for a liquid to evaporate
increases, but as the specific heat falls, the time it takes for a liquid to evaporate
reduces. It describes the direct relationship between specific heat and the length
of time it takes for a liquid to evaporate.
