1. a) State the advantages of HVDC transmission over EHVAC transmission [3+4+3=10]
for bulk power transmission.
b) Explain the static and dynamic characteristics of SCR. Draw a neat sketch
of different HVDC links.
c) Explain what are the factors involved for choice of voltage level in
HVDC interconnected system considering optimum voltage and line cost.
2. a) Discuss and analyse of 3-phase, six-pulse converter with grid control [4+4+2=10]
overlap angle,  < 60°.
b) Draw the voltage and the current waveforms of 6-pulse bridge converter
with α = 120°.
c) An existing 3-Φ-AC line of 132 kV, is connected into bipolar DC line
with maximum system voltage in both the cases being the same. Estimate
the DC voltage/pole and the number of standard 10 inch suspension
insulator required.
3. a) Explain the turn-on/ turn-off mechanism with series connected IGBTs [4+4+2=10]
and draw the typical voltage and current waveforms.
b) Explain the various triggering, protection scheme for SCR valve.
c) Find out the r.m.s. current on the secondary side of the converter
transformer of 6-pulse bridge converter with firing angle 30˚.

a) What are the advantages and disadvantages of homopolar HVDC links [3+4+3=10]
over other types of links?
b) Write down the purpose of each various apparatus required for HVDC
station with a neat schematic diagram.
c) Write down the advantages of voltage source converter based IGBT
HVDC scheme?
