The Biocultural Basis of Transcultural Nursing

The Biocultural Basis of Transcultural Nursing

1. There are three approaches to biocultural research: critical, cultural, and biological.
Explain and give a situational example for each.
Bioculture refers to the interaction of biological and cultural variables that
influence human behavior. It encompasses the medical sciences, social sciences, landscape
ecology, cultural anthropology, biotechnology, disability studies, the humanities, and the
economic and global environment.
Biocultural research may be approached in three ways.
1. Biological: examines evolution and how it affects illness.
Morning sickness has traditionally been seen as an unwelcome side effect of
pregnancy. The nausea, on the other hand, occurs during the fetus's fast tissue
differentiation, when development is most sensitive to toxins. And nauseous women prefer
to avoid strong-tasting, perhaps hazardous items. These findings led independent
researcher Margie Profet to suggest that pregnancy sickness is an adaptation through
which the mother shields the fetus from poisons. Profet put this theory to the test by
looking at pregnancy outcomes. Women who had more nausea were less likely to
miscarry. (While this data supports the concept, it is far from definitive; if Profet is true,
subsequent study should reveal that pregnant females of numerous species exhibit changes
in dietary choices. Her hypothesis also predicts an increase in birth abnormalities in
children born to mothers who have little or no morning sickness and consequently eat a
larger range of foods during pregnancy.)
2. Cultural: focuses on sickness interpretation and explanations.
Kuru was first recorded among the South Foré at the beginning of the 20th century
and it progressively became more common up through the 1950's. At its peak, it mostly
afflicted women in their 20's and 30's. This caused major social problems. Normally, men
had several wives and children were taken care by women. Now, however, there were too
few marriageable women, and men were left with the child care duties. Men were
resentful and confused by their situation. Since the South Foré had a personalistic
explanation for illness, they logically assumed that Kuru was the work of witches who
used contagious magic. As a result, people became very careful at cleaning up their house
sites to make sure that witches could not obtain any of their hair, fingernail clippings,
feces, or personal belongings. Witch hunts were organized and former witches were
forced to confess and then join anti-witch cults. None of these steps slowed the rate of
increase in the number of Kuru victims.
3. Critical,' focuses on how inequality influences sickness in society.
Poor Family, they don’t have access to medical procedures cause its expensive so
only privileged can, cause they are rich and have money to expend compare to poor who
need to pay large amount of money to have an access to what they need.

2.Ethical conflicts may arise when there are cultural differences among individuals. Give
situations pertaining to the 2 occurrences stated in the module .
Financial interests- an auditor holds shares in a client company.

Conflict between wanting a dividend from the shareholding and providing an

honest audit report on the entity. May want to hide errors found in the financial statements
to avoid qualifying the audit report and potentially decreasing the dividend payment.

3.We all know that no one can do away with going against the justice system whatever
culture you may be living with. Nevertheless, why is JUSTICE still included in the study
of Transcultural Nursing? Give your explanation.
Many individuals associate justice with fairness. But, while virtually everyone
values justice, it implies various things to different people. For example, social justice is
the belief that everyone, regardless of color, gender, or religion, deserves equal economic,
political, and social opportunities.
Personally I think the main reason why Justice is included at transcultural nursing
is that, sometimes our differences hinders us to attain Justice or equality wherein the
Justice, or Basic justice system that we should have ay nawawala dahil sa pagkakaiba o
differences na meron tayo, so with justice we will be able to learn to prioritize other,
regardless of differences, where we should respect different culture and anything in order
for us to deliver care that everyone need and deserve.
Despite diversity, even though we have a lot f difference, beliefs and culture, we all
deserve to be treated equally and be given medical attention that we need.
