GETTING ON TRACK

This pack contains four activities to help you apply what you have learned in the
‘Getting on Track’ module.
In Activity 1 you will be asked to think about what ‘phase’ of work you are currently in.
In Activity 2 you will be asked to think about who can help you with work-related
questions.
In Activity 3 you will practice choosing the ‘right’ person to help with questions inside or
outside of work.
In Activity 4 you will focus on the 3 ‘Secrets of Success’.

KEY LEARNING POINTS FROM THE MODULE:

1. Begin to think about the different phases you will go through when
starting work.
2. Identify who can help you both in and outside of work.
3. The three secrets of success in the work place – Relationships,
Knowledge & Skills, and Attitude & Behaviour.

ACTIVITY 1: WHAT ‘PHASE’ ARE YOU IN?


In the ‘Getting on Track’ module, you reviewed the four phases of work. In the table
below, you will review the four phases again.
If you are preparing to start a job or are already working, write down key actions that will
make you successful in the phase that you are currently in. If you are not working or
preparing to work, write one key action in each phase that you think will make you
successful at each stage.
There are some examples from the module listed for you, but you should think about
your own situation and what would help you right now.

ACTIVITY 2: PICK THE BEST PERSON TO HELP YOU


As the ‘Getting on Track’ module explains, there are different people you can turn to if
you need help or advice at work. Answer the questions below, by selecting the best
person to talk to from the options given.

1. Who would be the best person to talk to if you were unsure about company
policies and procedures?

o a) Your family and friends.


o b) Your HR representative.

2. Who would be the best person to talk to if you want to understand more
about what your role and responsibilities are going to be?

o a) Your manager or supervisor.


o b) A career advisor.

3. Who would be the best person to talk to if you didn’t know how to complete
a team-related task?

o a) Your colleagues.
o b) Any company employee.

TOP TIPS:

o Remember the rules around workplace confidentiality when talking with


friends, family or outside advisors.
o Remember to ask if the company you are joining has an HR representative.
If they don’t, ask who you should go to with questions about training, pay,
company policies etc.

ACTIVITY 3: WHO CAN HELP YOU?


If you are currently working, think about who you can ask for help in each of the
categories below and write their name(s) and questions you want to ask them.
If you are not preparing for a job or are not working, you can fill in the template by
writing down any questions you might have about starting a future job.
If you don’t know who can help you at work, then you need to find out. If you don’t have
an HR representative, you should ask your manager or a colleague who is responsible
for providing things like health and safety training.
Remember, if you ask family and friends for advice, you should think about the right
questions to ask them. Also seek out those who are good role models and who can
support you to be successful at work.
