SKILLS TO SUCCEED ACADEMY
You will need to use the information from the activities with a * against them in
activity 3 of this activity pack.
1. Try things out. You will never know what something is really like
unless you try it out. Trying things out helps you to understand if you
enjoy them and can be a good way of gaining new skills and
expertise.
Thinking of the careers you’ve listed above, consider how you can be active and
positive. Complete the table below for each career and plan some active and
positive steps that you can take. If you need to make a note of useful websites
and you are doing the pack online you can copy and paste the website address
into the table from the address bar on your internet browser.
You will need to complete this table for each career you’ve listed. Further copies
of this table are available in the appendix of this activity pack.

ACTIVITY 2: Goals*
Following all of the work that you have completed in the ‘Choose a Career’
course, you should be ready to set some career goals. You will remember from
the module that it's best to give all this experience and skill building some sort of
focus i.e. to have a goal in mind.
Not everyone will have an idea of what their goal is. The important thing is to have
something that you'd like to achieve in mind, so you are heading in a direction!
You may find that you have more than one goal; this is fine, so long as they don’t
cancel each other out. You can’t be a police officer and an astronaut at the same
time!
In the earlier activity packs, you will have completed activities to help you to know
more about yourself and to know more about what is out there.
Remember, goals can just be a general aim or an idea. You give as much detail
as you like. You can say ‘I want to be a wildlife photographer and work in the
Galapagos filming penguins’ or you can just say, ‘I want to take pictures for a
living’. Either one is a goal and either one works, so long as you approach it the
right way.
Based on what
you have learnt during this course, use the box below to write down a goal or
number of goals that you have about your career.

o Share your ‘Next steps’ actions from activity 1 with someone who can
review your answers. Ask them to help you to fill in any gaps that you
have. For example, they may know good places to research or know
people who work in that area who you could contact.
o Talk to someone about your goal(s) and ask them for advice about how
often you should revisit these. If you don’t have an Advisor, you could call
the National Careers Service Helpline to speak to a careers advisor about
your goals. You can also ask them for advice and guidance about the
areas that you are interested in.
o Once you have completed your Action Plan, set aside some time every
week to review it and assess your progress against it. You may find that as
you complete your initial actions, you create more that you can add into
your Action Plan. This is the best way to use the Action Plan, as a
document you refer to help you reach your goals one step at a time.
o If you find that you are hitting barriers or obstacles as you try to complete
your actions, make sure that you talk to your Advisor or find someone who
can help you to challenge them. Once again the National Careers Service
can help you with this.
