Different sites have different purposes, so consider if they are right for you before joining them.
Recent research found that 70% of job recruiters rejected candidates based on
information they found online2, it is important to carefully consider:
o The posts you write
o The pictures and videos you post and are tagged in
o The groups or forums you join
o Anybody else’s online activity that you interact with
o Personal information you share such as your phone number or address
To avoid people getting the wrong impression of you and putting yourself in an
awkward position, avoid posting or being associated with anything potentially
offensive, controversial or aggressive.
As you consider what shows on your online profiles, you can also limit what
people see by managing your privacy and security settings.

Many people forget that if someone else makes a post about you (such as
comments, pictures, and statuses) it can be flagged with your name.
If your friends or contacts haven’t managed their online privacy settings, people
may be able to view information about you on your contacts’ profiles or pages.
If your friends or contacts are posting things that may not reflect well on you, you
can un-tag yourself, request they remove it, or in certain instances think about if you
want to stay connected with them online
RESEARCHING PEOPLE
There are over 500 million people on LinkedIn that you can learn
from:
To help you make the most out of the information available from people on
LinkedIn, follow the steps below and answer questions 4, 5, and 6.
1. Select the people category next to the search bar (circled in red in the image
above).
2. Type in the job title you are interested in finding more about and your search will
allow you to find people with the same job title.
3. View profiles of two people in the list that have a job you are aspiring towards.
4. Look at their work history and the experience they’ve had before achieving their
current job. Write down 2 things you have learned about the steps you may need
to take to achieve your career goals based on the profiles you’ve read:
They demonstrated an effective performance review process, and how decisions are
made on compensation and other benefits.
5. Now, look at the skills of the same two people, to help you learn which skills are
important for the job you are aspiring towards. Write down 2 skills you want to
develop.
6. Now, look at which groups the two people are members of. Joining these can
help make your profile more impressive and credible, and help you keep up
with the industry trends and news.

groups look important to your desired job:
RESEARCHING GROUPS
There are over 2 million groups on LinkedIn that cover a range of industries,
communities, and interest groups.
To help you make the most out of the information available on LinkedIn, complete
the following activities and check off each as you complete it.
This will help you to increase your own knowledge, prepare you for applications,
and make your profile look more impressive to employers and recruiters.
