The Definition and Nature of Communication

Assignment – Chapter 1

It says that communication is the process of sharing and transmitting messages or


ideas/information from one person to another within and across channels settings, media,
and cultures. Communication can be also a process of expressing and exchanging
information, thoughts, ideas and feelings. Communication is described as the process of
sending and receiving messages, ideas, or information for business, organizational, or
personal purposes. The continual process of telling, listening, and understanding is referred
to as effective communication. Communication is systematic, communication occurs within
a variety of systems. Each system has its own communication patterns language and word
usage, as well as rules that are dependent on factors such as behavior and experiences.
Communication is irreversible, when thoughts are put into words, they become meaningful
experiential representations; and words spoken in haste or anger may have an impact.
Future communication possibilities. Communication is process, communication is an
ongoing and dynamic process, a changing process that is always influenced by various factors
circumstances, making it difficult to pinpoint where communication starts and stops.
Communication, according to Wood (20004), is a systematic process which individuals
interact with and through symbols to create and interpret meaning. There are numerous
contexts and situations in which communication can take place; it can be a face-to-face
interaction, a group discussion, a phone conversation, a letter correspondence, a meeting or
interview, a class recitation, and many more. Communication can take the form of written or
spoken words, actions, or both spoken words and nonverbal actions. The communication
process involves understanding, sharing, and meaning, and it consists essential elements:
speaker, message, encoding, channel, decoding, receiver, feedback, context, and barrier.
Speaker, is the source of information or message. Message, is the information, ideas, or
thoughts conveyed by the speaker in words or in actions. Encoding, it is the process of
transforming a message into words, actions, or symbols various kinds understood by the
speaker. Channel, it is the medium or the means, such as personal or non-personal, verbal or
nonverbal, in which the encoded message is conveyed. Encoding, it is the process of
decoding the speaker's encoded message by the receiver. Receiver, It is the message's
recipient, or someone who decodes the message. Feedback, is the reactions, responses, or
data provided by receiver. Context, the environment or setting in which communication
takes place. Barrier, the elements that influence communication flow. Good communicators
pay close attention, speak or write clearly, and respect opposing viewpoints. Communication
is everywhere.
