IOT APPLICATION FOR

CONTAINER MONITORING

In the process of transportation, Container

monitoring is crucial and urgent task.
Effective communication support is necessary
There were two technologies cable transmission
and carrier transmission method. Both are wired
technologies.
Wired approaches lead to the inconvenience of
loading/unloading containers, greatly affecting
the efficiency of logistic work.

ARCHITECTURE

The container monitoring system consists of Single

Container Monitoring Subsystem, a local wireless
communication system, a local monitoring centre, a
remote wireless communication system, a remote
monitoring centre, and client inquiry terminals.
The Single Container Monitoring Subsystem collects a
single container's status data.
A wireless ad hoc network establishes the local wireless
communication system (e.g., ZigBee) among multiple
containers, used for transmitting the collected information
data from the Single Container Monitoring Subsystem to
the local monitoring centre
After receiving the container data, the local monitoring
centre performs pre-processing and provides an initial risk
warning to the port storage site
Remote wireless transmission can be implemented by two
approaches. One is through a cellular gateway and cellular
mobile network; the other is through the satellite gateway
and satellite mobile network.

LOCAL WIRELESS COMMUNICATION

SYSTEM

The local wireless communication system is suggested to utilize the ZigBee technology

Zigbee is a standards-based wireless technology developed to enable low-cost, low-power wireless machine-to-

machine (M2M) and internet of things (IoT) networks.

ZigBee nodes have short active cycle to send and receive messages with lower power consumption
The sleep mechanism, it can support working hours from six months to two years with only two normal

V-model battery.
ZigBee requires little storage space, which significantly reduces the cost of ZigBee to 2 dollars per chip.
ZigBee data transfer rate can reach up to 250kb/s, 40kb/s, 20kb/s in the 2.4GHz (global) frequency band,

at 915MHz (USA) band, and 868MHz (Europe) band, respectively

A ZigBee network can accommodate 65535 nodes.
ZigBee nodes on containers can form an ad hoc network with zigbee interface on local monitoring

system acting as a sink node.

The ad hoc network formed by the Zigbee nodes on the containers is a reliable network with selfrecovery

capability since it can provide multiple paths for the transmitted data packets. Once a path fails, another

path is available and this increases the overall stability of the system.
LOCAL MONITORING CENTER

The local monitoring center can be implemented by intelligent terminals deployed

on ships and port storage sites.

The local monitoring center collects container data through the ZigBee network,

performs pre-processing, and provides risk and failure warnings to local responsible

staff members.
In addition, the local monitoring center can obtain local positions via the GPS

receiver to get the real-time locations of containers during transportation.

CELLULAR GATEWAY AND SATELLITE

GATEWAY

The cellular gateway achieves the network interface between the local monitoring

center and the cellular mobile communication network.

Two wireless access options, cellular network and satellite network, are provided for

the local monitoring center to select.

In network access, it is desirable to achieve the concept of Always Best Connected

(ABC) by observe and analyze the attributes of networks such as price, bandwidth,

and coverage.
For remote data transmission where the containers are transported on land, the

cellular network can be selected.

For ship-to-shore communications, a ship-to-shore radio link can be established by

only using the cellular network when the ships are within the coverage of cellular

network.
When the ships are out of the coverage of cellular network, a ship-to shore

communication path can be established by using satellite gateway and satellite

system.
REMOTE MONITORING CENTER

The remote monitoring center monitors the whole process of the logistics

system, responsible for data processing and risk assessment, as well as alarm and

inquiries.
The remote monitoring center should be able to receive container data from both

cellular network and satellite mobile network.

CLIENT INQUIRY TERMINAL

The cargo owners can get queries via client inquiry terminal (e.g., PC, and mobile

phone) from the Internet web sites provided by the remote monitoring center.
On the other hand, the remote monitoring center can take the initiative to send

a message to the client to update the status of the cargos

CPS MODEL FOR REMOTE CONTAINER

MONITORING AND MANAGEMENT

Employed as a framework for higher-level

management and control.
Cyber system is the collection of control logic and
sensor units, while physical system is the collection of
actuator units.
Sensory system comprises onboard RFID and sensor
infrastructure.
Actuator system comprises of networked onboard
actuators which is integrated with the alerting and
warning system installed on container carrying
vehicles.
Physical system is data linked to the cyber system by
the wireless networking system and can be employed
as an event-driven mechanism when needed.
Semantic control laws is the the core of a CPS control
unit and can be defined in the form of Event-
Condition-Action.
