INTRODUCTION:
Many view leadership, management and administration as synonymous, but there are
primary differences. It is not unusual for firms to expect individuals to possess the skills required
for each. However, an individual's unique abilities will determine whether they enjoy the
responsibilities and are successful.
All are important, and in smaller firms one person may be expected to do everything, with
input (or meddling) from the owners. Most larger firms have figured out the importance of
governance and tend to keep the majority of partners out of firm management.
To further explain these statements, I refer to Jim Collins' five levels of leadership from his
book Good to Great:
REFLECTION:
Do you need to become manager first before becoming an administrator? Why yes?
Why Not?

Management is the realization of policies of the school and the efficient and effective
maintenance of the school’s current activities. Management is doing things right while
leadership is doing the right things.
Sergiovanni et al. firstly defined administration as the process of working with and
through others in order to accomplish organizational goals efficiently. Furthermore, they
viewed administrators as those who are responsible for accomplishing certain objectives
efficiently. Subsequently, Sergiovanni et al. viewed administration as the art and science of
getting things done efficiently.
Secondly, in terms of educational administration, in the United States, according to
Sergiovanni et al. “The governance and administration of education is a good example of the
nature and importance of administrative activity in our society” (p. 4). In addition, the
educational establishment ranks among the largest of public and private enterprises. Thus,
educational administrators from all levels, from superintendents to chairpersons, take their roles
seriously in order to build quality education.
In summary, there are seven factors which can be conceptualized in the synthesis of
knowledge in educational administration:
1. Functions’
2. Skills
3. Ethics
4. Structure
5. Operational Areas
6. Contexts
7. Issues
