Activity 4
Children with Special Needs

1. Identify a special child case that you have observed. Based on what you have observed, what needs to be done to improve the teaching-learning situation of
the learners with special needs. .

environment just like the other normal kids,

however, since most of them are impulsive,
dangerous things must be away from them in
the classroom.

2. Write down three significant characteristics or behavioral indicators of these children with special needs.

Type of Special Need Characteristics

a. Children with cognitive/academic difficulties 1. Cannot follow simple instructions or have trouble
understanding social rules.

2. Has difficulty following simple concepts and not able to answer

it correctly on paper activities.

3. Find it hard to remember things and have trouble solving

problems.

b. children with delays in cognitive functioning Difficulty speaking

 Infantile behavior that persists into preschool and school
years

 Show a preference for independent reading and want to
read adult-level books early on.
 Display rapid learning and easy recall of factual information.

information.
 Use analogies in speech and writing.

d. children with physical and sensory challenges  Hearing Loss

 Vision Loss
 Multisensory Impairment occurs when there is a hearing loss
and visual impairment, which are both educationally
significant although they may be at different levels.
Sensory Processing Difficulty
- A child may be under-sensitive or over-sensitive in the 5
areas:
 Proprioception
 Vestibular
 Auditory
 Oral Sensory
 Tactile

e. children with social and behavioral problems Rarely will a child under 5 years old receive a diagnosis of a serious
behavioral disorder. However, they may begin displaying

symptoms of a disorder that could be diagnosed later in childhood.

These may include:

 attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

 oppositional defiant disorder (ODD)
 autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
 anxiety disorder
 depression
 bipolar disorder
 learning disorders
 conduct disorders

3. What should be your frame of mind in terms of teaching methodologies, if you have students diagnosed as having special needs?

1. Social and Behavioral Disability

First, I should learn each od my students needs or disabilities so that I will know how to help them. I should be more educated
when it comes to addressing social and behavioral needs. For a child who has social needs, I can practice her/him to speak in front
little by little so that the child will be more used to communicate with others.

Same thing with a child with behavioral disabilities. I should implement routine and specific instructions for a child to follow so
that he/she will be aware of the consequences of his/her actions. I have to remember always that for me to address the needs of
these children, I have to be more knowledgeable about their conditions and be more understanding and accepting.
2. Giftedness

Based on my experiences, Children with gifted intellectual skills easily get bored and not involved in the class if they already knew
the lesson. They will be not interested to pay attention. So I we learned that we have an intellectually gifted student, we have to
assess their knowledge about the concept we present. If it’s too easy for them, we can give them a separate activity that will
interest them and exercise their thinking skills. In this way, they will be more focused with their work.

Again, it is very important that we know each weakness and strength of our student so we can address their needs effectively.
3. ADHD

Based on my experiences, these activities can help accommodate a child with ADHD:

 Extra time on tests;

 Instruction and assignments tailored to the child;
 Positive reinforcement and feedback;
 Using technology to assist with tasks;
 Allowing breaks or time to move around;

 Changes to the environment to limit distraction; and

 Extra help with staying organized.

For Communication
 Give frequent feedback and attention to positive behavior;
 Be sensitive to the influence of ADHD on emotions, such as self-esteem issues or difficulty regulating feelings;
 Provide extra warnings before transitions and changes in routines; and
 Understand that children with ADHD may become deeply absorbed in activities that interest them (hyper-focus) and may
need extra assistance shifting their attention.

It might be very challenging for both parents and teachers; however, we have to realize that the people that can best help these
children are the parents, teachers and other professionals who are experts on their conditions. We have an important role on our
students so we have to do our best to help them overcome their disabilities or special needs.
