OBJECTIVE: Solves problems involving direct proportion in the context of distance, rate and
time using appropriate strategies and tools.

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY

In a direct proportion, when one quantity increases, the other quantity increases and
vice versa.

Try to Discover!

A car can travel 240 km in 4 hours. How far can it travel in 6 hours?

Understanding the problem if the car travels in a longer period, it will gain more
distance. Seeing this proportion:

↑ DISTANCE = ↑ TIME

Since both quantities are increasing (shown with arrow up sign), the proportion is called
a direct proportion.

Setting up the proportion:

𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒
=
𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒 𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒
240 𝑛
=
4 6

To solve, simply cross multiply:

(240) (6) = (𝑛)(4)

Divide both sides by 4:

(240) (6) (𝑛)(4)
=
4 4

Dividing : 60 1
(240) (6) (𝑛)(4)
=
4 4

Name of Teacher: ______________________

(60)(6) = 𝑛
360 = 𝑛
𝒏 = 𝟑𝟔𝟎 𝒌𝒎

The car can travel 360 km in 6 hours.

Let us try another problem:

After some time, Gino travelled 240 km after driving 80 km/hr in his car. Given the same
time, how far will Gino go if he travelled half the speed?

(You may try to answer on your own using a scratch paper. Go back to the page to
check)

*If he travelled slower, distance will be less. It is a direct proportion.

*Since he is travelling half the speed, he will be travelling half of 80 km/hr

80 ÷ 2 = 40 𝑘𝑚/ℎ𝑟

Setting up the equation:

𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒
=
𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑

240 𝑛
=
80 40

(240)(40) = (𝑛)(80)
3 1
(240)(40) (𝑛)(80)
=
80 (80)
(3)(40) = 𝑛

120 = 𝑛
𝑛 = 120 𝑘𝑚

EXAMPLE PROBLEM 1
It takes Johann 20 minutes to ride his bicycle at 20kph from home to the pet shop. To shorten travel time to
16 minutes for the same distance, how fast should he cycle?

Solution:
Let the desired speed be X kph. Then we have the following table.

Speed (kph) 20 X
Time (in minutes) 20 16

The faster the bicycle is driven, the less time required to reach the destination.
So, this is an inverse proportion

OBJECTIVE: Solves problems involving partitive proportion in the contexts of

distance, rate and time using appropriate strategies and tools.

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:

In solving problem involving partitive proportion in the contexts of distance,
rate and time using appropriate strategies and tools, we have to know the following:
 Partitive proportion, a whole is divided into parts that are proportional to the given
ratio.
 Road speed limit signages are used in many places to regulate the speed of the
vehicles. They are normally indicates using a traffic sign.
 Speed limits are commonly set by the legislative bodies of nations or provincial
governments and enforced by national or regional traffic enforcers.
 Speed is a scalar quantity that refers to “how fast an object is moving”
 Speed can be thought of as the rate by which an object covers distance
 A fast-moving object has a high speed and covers a relatively long distance in a short
amount of time. Contrast this to a slow-moving object that has a low speed and
covers a relatively small amount of distance in the same amount of time. An object
with no movement at all has a zero speed.
 Average speed – Is a measure of the distance travelled in a given period of time; it is
sometimes referred to as the ratio of distance and time.
 Distance – Is the total length between two positions
 Time – Is the quantity measured or measurable period during which an action,
process, or condition exist or continues.

OBJECTIVE: Finds the percentage or rate or base in a given problem.

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:

 To find percentage ( P), multiply the base( B) by the rate (R))
or P=BxR
 To find for the rate, divide the percentage by the base.
R=P
B
Express the answer in percent form

 To find base, divide the percentage by the rate.

B=P
R
Express the rate first in decimal form.

LET’S TRY THESE!

FIND THE PERCENTAGE OF A NUMBER

Problem

In a class of 50 pupils, 10% are absent. How many pupils are absent?

The problem may be stated as:

10% of 50 is what number?

The rate is 10%, the base is 50, and the percentage is the unknown in the problem.
We can solve it by using the given formula.

Percentage = Base x Rate

or
P= BxR

The method of solving this type of percent problem is simple. First, we change the rate to
either a decimal or a fraction. Second, we multiply the decimal or fraction by the base to
find the percentage.
Name: ________________________________ Grade and Section: _____________
Name of Teacher: ______________________

Method 1: Using a decimal Method 2: Using a fraction

10% = 0.10 10% = 10 = 1

100 10
P=BxR P=BxR

P = 50 x .10 = 50 x 1 = 50 x 1
= 5.00 10 1 10
=5 = 5

Thus, 10% of 50 is 5. Therefore, 5 pupils are absent.

Which of the two method is easier?

FINDING THE RATE

The second type of percent problem involves finding the rate when the percentage and
the base are known.

Problem

If there are 12 boys in a class of 50. What percent of the class are boys?

This problem can be stated as:

12 is what percent of 50?

P R B
The percentage and the base are given, and we are asked to find the rate. We use the
following formula to find the rate.

Rate = Percentage
Base
or
R= P
B

To solve the problem, divide the percentage by the base and change the quotient to
percent .
Method 1: R =P 0.24
B 50 ⌡ 12.00
= 12 - 0
50 120
= 0.24 = 24% - 100
200
- 200
0
Therefore, 24% of the class are boys.

FINDING THE BASE

In the third type of percent problem, the rate and the percentage are known. But
the base is unknown.

Problem:

In a Math test, Johana answered 20 problems correctly. This was 80% of the
problems. How many problems were in the test?

This problem can be stated as

20 is 80% of what number?

P R B

To solve the problem, first change the rate to either a decimal or a fraction, then
divide the percentage by the rate.

Base = Percentage
Rate
or

B= P
R

Method 1: Using a decimal

80% = 0.80

B = P = 20 = 20_ = 25
R 80% 0.80

Method 2 : Using a fraction

80% = 80 = 4
100 5
B = 20 = 20 x 5 = 25 = 25
4 1

Thus, 25 is 80% of 20.

MODULE IN MATHEMATICS 6
Quarter 2 / Week 2 / Day 5
OBJECTIVE : Solves routine problems involving finding the percentage, rate and base
using appropriate problem solving strategies and tools.
YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:

 Percentage ( P) is the number or amount that represents a part or a

whole.
 Base ( B ) is the number that represents the whole or entire amount.
 Rate ( R ) is the number compared to 100. Usually has either a percent
sign (%) or the word “percent” with it.
In solving for percentage, base and rate apply the Techan’s triangle formula
below where, P= Percentage, R = Rate, and B = Base

P=B×R

P R=
𝑃
𝐵
𝑃
R B B=
𝑅

TRY TO DISCOVER
Example 1.Looking for the Percentage
Mother saw a dress good for Roma. The dress is marked
₱250. When she paid the dress the cashier told her to just
pay 75% of the amount. How much should mother pay for
the dress?

Let us solve the problem together. It is actually asking what is 75% of ₱250. In
this problem, what is unknown is the percentage.
To find the percentage, just multiply the base and the rate

Percentage (P) = Base (B) × Rate ( R )

Name : _____________________________ Grade and Section : _____________
Teacher : ___________________________

So: P =BxR
= ₱250 x 75%
= ₱250 x .75 This is the equivalent of 75% in decimal.

P= ₱187.50 Answer

Example 2. Looking for the Base

Courtney bought a dress for herself. She paid 75%
only of the amount of the dress for it is on sale. She paid
₱450 for the dress. How much is the original price of the
dress?

The problem in short is asking for the base. It can be stated as ₱450 is 75% of
what number?
To find the base, just divide the percentage by the rate.

Base = Percentage
Rate

𝑃
So: B = 𝑅

₱450
= 75% Change this to decimal
₱450
= .75

B = ₱600

Example 3. Looking for the Rate

Mother and Ivory spent 6 hours shopping at the

Evia Mall. If there are 24 hours a day, what percent of
the day they did they spend for shopping?

The third problem is asking for the rate. It can be stated as “What percent of 24 is 6?”
To find the rate divide the percentage by the base.

Rate = Percentage
So: R=
Base
𝑃
=𝐵
6
= 24

=.25 Change this to percent.

R = 25%
