III. Procedure

Teacher’s Activities Student’s Activities

Good morning, Class! Good morning, Sir!

Before we begin, may I request

everyone to please stand for the One of the students will lead the prayer.
opening prayer.

Now, let me check first your Each student is expected to say present.
attendance. Once I call your name, say
“present”.

Elicit:
Last meeting, we have discussed about
solving quadratic equation by extracting
square roots.

Now, who can recall the steps in 1. Write the equation in the form ax2
solving quadratic equations by = c.
extracting square roots? 2. If a is not equal to one, divide
both sides of the equation by the
value of a.
3. Extract the root to find the value

1
of the variable.
4. Check by substituting each root
in the original equation.

Alright, very good!

So, remember class that we can only

use this method when b is equal to
zero.

Engage:
Now class, what if the “b” in the
quadratic equation that we are going to
solve is not equal to 0? What are we
going to do?

So, for this morning we will discuss

another way of solving quadratic
equations when “b” is not equal to zero
and that through factoring.

Are you ready, class? Yes, sir!

Explore:
Can you still remember, how to factor a Yes, sir!
polynomial?

Okay, so let’s see.

Factor the following polynomials.

a. x2 – 6x + 8 a. (x – 4) (x – 2)
b. x2 + 4x – 5 b. (x + 5) (x – 1)
c. 6x – 2x + 8 c. 4(x + 2)

Alright, now we will use this idea of

factoring to solve quadratic equations.

Explain:

Here are the steps in solving quadratic

equations by factoring:
1. Transform the quadratic
equation into standard form if
necessary.
2. Factor the quadratic expression.
3. Apply the zero-product property
by setting each factor of the
quadratic expression equal to
zero.
Note: Zero-product property – if
the product of two real number
is zero, then either of the two is
equal or both numbers are
equal to zero.

4. Solve each resulting equation.

2
5. Check the values of the variable
obtained by substituting each in
the original equation.

Solve x2 – 6x + 8 =0 by factoring. Apply

the steps given above.

Is the equation written in a standard Yes, sir!

form?

Alright, so we don’t need to rewrite the

equation since it is already in standard
form.

Proceed to Step 2. Factor the left

member of the equation. So, what is the (x – 4) (x – 2)
factor of x2 – 6x + 8?

Very good! Now, we can write the factor

as (x – 4) (x – 2) = 0.

Then, after getting the factor, apply the

zero-product property. We need to set
each factor equal to zero. So, the factor x–4=0|x–2=0
will become…?

Okay! Now, let’s solve the resulting

equation. What will be the value of x? x–4=0 | x–2=0
How many values of x do we have? x=0+4 | x=0+2
x=4 | x=2

There are two values of x, one is x is

equal to 4 and the other is x is equal to
2.

That’s great! Now, we can check if our

answers are correct by substituting
each value to the original equation. Can x=4 | x=2
you solve them? x2 – 6x + 8 = 0 | x2 – 6x + 8 = 0
(4)2 – 6(4) + 8 = 0 | (2)2 – 6(2) + 8 = 0
16 – 24 + 8 = 0 | 4 – 12 + 8 = 0
-8 + 8 = 0 | -8 + 8 = 0
0=0 | 0=0

Is our solution correct? Yes, sir.

Elaborate:
Now, it’s your turn to solve!

Solve the following quadratic equations

by factoring. Answer the questions that
follow. Do this in group of 3 members.
1. x2 + 7x = 0
1. x + 7x = 0
2
x (x + 7) = 0

1. How did you find the solutions of 2. x2 – 25 = 0
each equation? (x + 5) (x – 5) = 0
2. What mathematics
concepts/principles did you x+5=0 | x–5=0
apply in finding the solutions? x=0–5 | x=0+5
3. Compare your answers with x = -5 | x=5
those of your groupmates. Did
you arrive at the same 3. 4s2 + 9 = 12s
