Instructions: complete the following questions showing all working.

1. A force of 15 N is applied to a door handle, 12 cm from the pivot. Calculate the

moment of the force in newton meter.

2. A parent and child are at opposite ends of a playground see-saw. The parent weighs
750 N and the child weighs 250 N. The child sits 2.4 m from the pivot. Calculate the
distance the parent must sit from the pivot for the see-saw to be balanced.

3. A waiter holds a tray horizontally in one hand between fingers and thumb as shown in
the diagram.

P, Q and W are the three forces acting on the tray.

(i) State one relationship between the forces that must be satisfied if the tray is to
remain horizontal and in equilibrium.
(ii) If the mass of the tray is 0.12 kg, calculate the magnitude of the force W.
(iii) Calculate the magnitudes of forces Q taking the moments at P (use the force
acting on p as the pivot).

4. If w1 is 12.5 N and 3.5 m from the pivot point, what weight w2 is required if placed at
2.5 m from the pivot to balance the beam?
