Nano material

 What is nano material?

Nanomaterial is a material having least particles sized
ranges between 1 to 100nm and which is produced by
nanotechnology.
Examples: Titanium oxide, iron oxide, azo pigments,
synthetic amorphous silica.
 Uses of nanomaterial:
1. In healthcare field such as transportation of
chemotherapy drugs directly to cancerous growths.
2. Carbon nanotubes can be used in the aerospace in
morphing of aircraft wings.
3. In environmental preservation process by the use of
nanowires
4. In air purification and waste water treatment.
5. In the cosmetics industry, mineral nanoparticles
such as titanium oxide are used in sunscreen.
6. In sports industry for producing baseball bats that
have been made with carbon nanotubes, making the
bats lighter and improving their performance.
7. In military purpose.
8. In coatings to form a self- cleaning surface.
 Advantages of nanomaterials:
 Highly porous.
 Nanomaterials can be used in generating the energy
such as solar panel.
 The very large surface -to-volume ratio of
nanomaterials useful in their use in medical industry
which permits the bonding of cells and active
ingredients.

 Disadvantages of nanomaterials:
 Due to widespread use of nanomaterials, there is not
large amount of information on health and safety
aspects of exposure to the materials.
 Expensive.
 Recycling and disposal problem.
 Health problem.
 Biologically harmful.

Nanomaterial synthesis and processing

There are many different ways of creating
nanoparticles and can be synthesized artificially for
certain specific materials. These synthesized
materials can be arranged into useful shapes so that
finally the material can be applied to a certain
application.

1. Mechanical Grinding
2. Sol-gel process
3. Furnace
4. Gas condensation processing
5. Chemical vapour condensation
6. Laser ablation
