PRACTICAL WORK :6
TITLE : EARTH ELECTRODE RESISTANCE TEST
CLO : CLO 2
OUTCOMES :
By the end of the practical class, student should be able to :
1. Conduct the earth electrode resistance test with confidence as required by ST Regulations.
2. Demonstrate a proper method to handle earth electrode resistance tester.
3. Identify a suitability location for conduct earth electrode resistance test.

EQUIPMENTS/COMPONENTS:

No. Component / Accessories Quantity

1 Earth Electrode Resistance Tester 1 set

SAFETY PRECAUTION:
1. Always aware, any machine that works on electricity is dangerous.
2. Understand the safety procedures specified by the lecturer.
3. Handle the hand tools carefully and place them in a safer position.
4. Conduct installation in an organized manner as this can minimize the risk of accident occur.
5. Read and follow the practical procedures and refer to lecturer if you have any problems.

PROCEDURES:
Important: This practical work must be conducted under a lecturer observation ONLY.
1. Choose a proper and suitable location and earth chamber for conduct earth electrode resistance
test.
2. Connect cables as required (Refer to Figure 1).:
i. Terminal ’E’ is connected to the electrode to be tested (green conductor).
ii. Terminal ‘P’ is connected to the potential spike (yellow conductor) at a distance of 10 meters
from the earth electrode.
iii. Terminal ‘C’ is connected to the current spike (red conductor) at a distance of 20 meters from
the earth electrode.
3. Press ‘TEST’ button and record the first reading (Z1) in Table 1.
4. The test must be repeated at least three times, to ensure that the reading is not affected by
interacting earthing regions.
5. Move the voltage spike to the left side with a distance of 6 meters from the original position (Refer
to Figure 2). Record the second reading (Z2) in Table 1.
6. Finally, move the voltage spike to the right side with a distance of 6 meters from the original
position. Record the third reading (Z3) in Table 1 and calculate the average resistance value, ZT.
7. Repeat the step 1 until 6 for another two location and record the obtained result.
