Introduction

The ACUPRO System is Spectronics' implementation of ISO 10534-2, ASTM

E1050, and ASTM E2611 for the measurement of acoustical properties of materials.1-3
ACUPRO may be used to determine the normal-incidence complex acoustical impedance
and the absorption coefficient of the material, each as a function of frequency. Most
materials of interest in acoustic applications are porous or fibrous materials such as open-
cell foams or glass fiber blankets of various densities. The measurement is conducted by
inserting a small sample of the material into a sample holder that is mounted at the end of
the ACUPRO plane wave tube.

Impedance Tube

Transmission Loss

• Transmission loss (TL) is proportional to the ratio of the sound-power level on

the receiver side of a barrier to the sound-power level on the source side.
• Using the same door example, the transmission loss of the door is determined by
the manufacturer by taking measurements in a special laboratory and expressing the
results as sound power.
• It is also expressed in terms of dB reduction.

3.0 PROCEDURES/ METHODOLOGY

Procedure

Calibration for transmission loss.

1. Open ACUPRO measurement system.
2. Install ‘load A’ as shown to the impedance tube.

3. Click Ab. Meas. Options and select Cal-std.

4. Make sure microphone position in position 1-2-3-4 as shown, then ‘ load A’ surface plunger
same level to sample holder without sample.

5. Click ‘START’ and wait run average completed until ‘200’, then click ‘OK’ and next click
‘CALCULATE’.
6. Change microphone position to 3-2-1-4 position.
7. Proceed with select Cal-H13, where the microphone position in 3-2-1-4 position.
8. Click ‘START’ and wait run average completed until ‘200’, then click ‘OK’ and next click
‘CALCULATE’.
9. Change microphone position to 1-3-2-4 position.
10. Proceed with select Cal-H23, where the microphone position in 1-3-2-4 position.
11. Click ‘START’ and wait run average completed until ‘200’, then click ‘OK’ and next click
‘CALCULATE’.
12. Change microphone position to 1-2-4-3 position.
13. Proceed with select Cal-H43, where the microphone position in 1-2-4-3 position.
14. Click ‘START’ and wait run average completed until ‘200’, then click ‘OK’ and next click
‘CALCULATE’.

Measuring sample transmission loss.

15. Measure sample thickness using vernier caliper, then install sample into impedance tube as
shown. Then, input thickness value into measuring interface.
16. Proceed with select Measurement Load A, where the microphone position in 1-2-3-4
position.
17. Click ‘START’ and wait run average completed until ‘200’, then click ‘OK’ and next click
‘CALCULATE’.
18. Click ‘SAVE’ and rename file (.xls).
19. Change ‘Load B’ at end of the impedance tube.
20. Proceed with select Measurement Load B, where the microphone position in 1-2-3-4
position.
21. Click ‘START’ and wait run average completed until ‘200’, then click ‘OK’ and next click
‘CALCULATE’.
22. Click ‘SAVE’ and rename file (.xls).
23. Repeat procedure 15 until 22 with another 2 sample.
24. Combine three (3) sampling data in one (1) graph (dB vs frequency) for Measurement Load
A & discuss the results.
25. Also combine three (3) sampling data in one (1) graph (dB vs frequency) for Measurement
Load B & discuss the results.
