4.0 THEORY
4.1 Switchgear
The apparatus used for switching, controlling and protecting the electrical circuits and equipment is known
as switchgear. The term ‘switchgear’ is a generic term encompassing a wide range of products like circuit
breakers, switches, switch fuse units, off-load isolators, HRC fuses, contactors, earth leakage circuit
breakers (ELCBs) and many more.
A switch is a device which is used to open or close an electrical circuit in a convenient way. It can be used
under full-load or no-load conditions but it cannot interrupt the fault currents. When the contacts of a
5
switch are opened, an arc is produced in the air between the contacts. This is particularly true for circuits
of high voltage and large current capacity. Each set of contacts can be in one of two states: either 'closed'
meaning the contacts are touching and electricity can flow between them, or 'open', meaning the contacts are
separated and non-conducting. A switch may be directly manipulated by a human as a control signal to a
system, such as a computer keyboard button, or to control current flow in a circuit, such as a light switch.

4.3 Two Way Switch
Two way switch usually used to control one or more lighting from 2 different location
commonly staircase and long corridor in an industrial building.

7
4.4 Intermediate Switch
Intermediate switching, control of a light or a number of lights from three or four separate
positions is made possible by the use of one or two ‘intermediate’ switches in addition to two 2-
way switches.

5.0 Practical Works procedures
1. Terminate properly all extra cables at the switch, socket and lighting point.
2. Refer to Figure 5.1, identify the exact location of all lighting switch and point. Install all the
electrical switches and other accessories and tighten all termination screw.
Note: In order to reduce excessive usage of cables because of wrong or bad termination, please
refer to your lecturer for more detail and tips on how to perform good working practices.
