COURSE LAB SHEET 1 TOPIC TOPIC 1 – MICROWAVE
WORK COMPONENT
AND SOURCES

OBJECTIVES : At the end of this lab sheet, student will be able to

1. Identify the components and basic accessories for microwave test bench.
(P1)
2. Sketch the components and basic accessories for microwave test bench.
(P3)
3. Assembles the components by referring to given Diagram. (P3)
EQUIPMENT : Microwave Test Bench

Theory :

There are two categories for microwave measurement testbench, that are;
i. Gred I – to get accurate data with error <5%
ii. Gred II – to observe characteristic / behaviour of microwave

Measurement for the high frequency signal involved special components that are required to be assembled
on a flat surface. All the components have to be assembled together by screwing the connector of the
components and all components must be aligned with each other as to prevent signal leaking at the joints
(the connected part).

High frequency signal propagated in waveguide in various mode. Mode is a pattern or

configuration of electric field E and magnetic field H of the signal that propagate in waveguide .
Propagation mode used for this test bench is dominant mode named as TE1,0 and rectangular waveguide is
the transmission line for this testbench.

Microwave system also require special components called basic accessories for special purposes,
for example when the direction of the signal or the polarization of the signal need to be changed. The
basic accessories must come with a specific dimension and shape in order to minimize the internal
reflection or to reduce the VSWR that will occur inside this irregular shape. Figure 1.0 shows the block
diagram of components to perform measurement for the system.

PROCEDURE & RESULT :

1. Identify closely the characteristic of all the components given to you. Snap using your
handphone the following components:
a. Microwave source
b. Isolator
c. Variable attenuator
d. Frequency meter
e. Slotted section & diode detector
f. Directional coupler
g. VSWR meter
h. Termination – Short circuit and Resistive

a. Microwave source Reflex Klystron consists of an electron gun, a cathode filament, an

anode cavity, and an electrode at the cathode potential. It provides
low power and has low efficiency.

b. Isolator An isolator is a two-port device that transmits microwave or radio

frequency power in one direction only.

c. Variable attenuator These attenuators contain a section of waveguide with a narrow slot
milled in the broad wall.

d. Frequency meter Instrument that displays the frequency of a periodic electrical signal

e. Slotted section & diode detector It consists of a precision transmission line, usually co-axial but
waveguide implementations are also used, with a movable
insulated probe inserted into a longitudinal slot cut into the line.

f. Directional coupler Directional coupler only couple power flowing in one direction. Power
entering the output port is coupled to the isolated port but not to the
coupled port and it designed to split power equally between two ports is
called a hybrid coupler.

g. VSWR meter It varies from 1 to (plus) infinity and is always positive.

h. Termination – Short circuit and Resistive Terminator is a device which is connected to the last peripheral device
in a sequence or the last node in a network.
2. Draw the listed waveguide component
a. Bend
b. Twist
c. T junction – E plane & H plane
d. Magic-T junction

3. Assemble the component by referring to Figure 1.0 and snap the whole microwave system.
QUESTIONS & DISCUSSION : (10 marks)
1. Rectangular waveguide is the type of transmission line used in the lab. Draw this waveguide with its

connector. (2m)

2. State the function for all components listed in step (1). (8m)

COMPONENTS FUNCTIONS
a. Microwave Source Works on reflections and oscillations in a single cavity,
which has a variable frequency.
b. Isolator Used to isolate one component from reflections of other
components in the transmission line.

c. Variable attenuator The variable attenuator is used to adjust power, reduce

reflection interaction, and provide isolation for certain
components where needed.

d. Frequency meter To measure the frequency of a microwave signal, the

Resonant Cavity Frequency Meter is tuned until it
resonates at the signal frequency.

e. Slotted section & diode detector Slotted section is basically used to measure standing wave
ratio (VSWR).

f. Directional coupler Used for isolating, eliminating or combining signals in

microwave signal routing and radio frequency.

g. VSWR meter Measure of how efficiently radio-frequency power is

transmitted from a power source, through a transmission
line, into a load.

h. Termination – Short circuit and Resistive Absorb energy and prevent RF signals from reflecting
back from open-ended or unused waveguide ports.

CONCLUSION: (5 marks)
Give your conclusion.

As a conclusion for this practical work 1, we learned the characteristic and function of the components for microwave test
bench. Furthermore, we can clearly sketch the components for microwave test bench. Moreover, we know to assemble the
components to form a microwave test bench. Lastly, we also learned to responsibility while handling microwave equipment
or transmission system
