Part A- Max. Time 1 hour, Max. Marks 30

Instructions –
1. Part A consists of 7 short answer type questions. This part is to be answered in first 1 hour.
2. A separate answer sheet is provided for Part A. Any rough work may be done on the supplementary sheet.
3. Part B is to be answered on the main answer booklet.
4. Overwritten answers will not be rechecked.

Q. 1 A rectangular waveguide carries an electromagnetic wave having a frequency of 4000 MHz and a
standing wave indicator shows that the wavelength of the wave in the guide is 11.4 cm. what is (a) The
cut-off wavelength and (b) The velocity at which energy is propagated along the guide? 4

Q. 2 A 6 GHz signal is to be propagated in the dominant mode in a rectangular waveguide. If its group
velocity is 90% of the free space velocity of light, what must be the breadth of the waveguide? 2

Q. 3 A uniform plane wave in air is normally incident onto a lossless dielectric plate of thickness λ/8 and of
intrinsic impedance η = 260 Ω.
(a) Determine standing wave ratio in front of the plate
(b) Fraction of the incident power transmitted to the other side of the plate. 4

Q. 4 A Lossy material have µ = 5µ0 and ε = 2ε0. If at 5 MHz, the phase constant is 10 rad/m. Calculate
(a) The loss tangent
(b) The conductivity of the material
(c) Attenuation Constant
(d) Intrinsic impedance 8

Q. 5 A short vertical grounded antenna is designed to radiate at 1 MHz. Calculate the radiation resistance, if
the effective height of the antenna is 30 metres? 2

Q. 6 In a material for which conductivity is 5 Siemen/m, εr=1 and electric field intensity is E = 250 sin 1010 t
V/m. Calculate
(a) Conduction current density
(b) Displacement Current density.
(c) The frequency at which Conduction current and Displacement Current densities have equal
magnitudes. 6

Q. 7 (a) At what frequency the wave impedance of the wave inside a waveguide will be equal to η(Intrinsic
impedance of free space)
(b) Consider a rectangular waveguide having cutoff at 2 GHz. A TM z wave is launched inside the 4
waveguide at 2 GHz.Will wave propagate inside waveguide?
