6. Theory
Battery testers (also referred to as “battery condition indicators, battery analyzer”) are designed to
indicate the condition of the electrochemical cell battery. Battery tester permit the user to visually
determine whether the cell needs to be replaced or not.

LAB 4 LED 20303 – ELECTRONIC WORKSHOP PRACTICE PAGE 3/6

The vehicle storage battery is monitored to determine battery capacity, state of charge and certain
fault conditions, as consequence, a variety of device have been proposed whereby user can
determine a battery’s energy level with reasonable certainty.

In this lab, the battery tester function as a car battery tester and car alternator for a standard car
( car battery usually 12Vdc)
It informs the user with the following information:-

i. The battery totally discharge (the voltage between poles is less than 9V)
ii. The battery is partially discharge (the voltage between poles is between 9V and 11.5V)
iii. The battery is normally charge (the voltage between poles is between 11.5V and 15V)

7. Procedures:

1. Before mount the components on the strip board, understand first the above schematic
diagram.
2. Sketch a layout of the components on graph paper. (please refer to components’ datasheet for
component layout)
3. Place all components as sketched on graph paper to your stripboard.
4. Solder all components. (becareful not to overheat the component)
5. After finish, before testing using power supply, test the continuity first.
6. Test the project. View the result by using multimeter and oscilloscope.
7. Note down the result.
