Lesson Topic Hurling

Content Objective Students will be able to accurately

demonstrate how the game of hurling is
played.

Language Objective Students will be able to summarize in writing

the rules of hurling in the pamphlet that they
will make.

Learning Strategies 1. Think-Pair-Share: the students will

have an opportunity to first think
independently about the question given
to them by the teacher and they are
then given an opportunity to discuss
with their partner. This allows for the
students to first create independent
thoughts and not rely solely on their
partners thoughts or ideas. By sharing
with the class the students' opinions are
validated and everybody gets an
opportunity to learn from their peers.

2. Total Physical Response: During the

vocabulary the teachers will have a
movement for each word to help the
students remember it better. For
example, making a ball with their
hands for the word sliotar, which
means ball. This helps ELL students
because movement is universal unlike
language, which makes it easy to
understand. So if an ELL student
doesn't understand the word, they still
cna remember the movement
associated with said word.

3. Higher-order questioning: Throughout

the lessons, the teachers will ask the
students to compare and contrast the
rules, equipment, etc. of hurling to
sports they might have played or might
watch. This will help ELL students
because it lets them relate hurling to
something more familiar to them
which will help them recall
information regarding hurling better.

Key Vocabulary 1. Hurley - The stick you hold that is

made from ash
2. Sliotar - The ball
3. Bas - The bottom of the Hurley
4. Puck (out) - Hitting the ball
5. Camogie - the female version of
hurling that has similar rules

Materials - Colored paper

- Markers/colored pencils

Motivation (building background) The teachers will ask the students to put a
thumbs up if they have played lacrosse,
baseball, or hockey/field hockey. The teachers
will ask the students to share what they do
with the ball in each of those sports.
Following this, the teacher will play part of
the following video explaining hurlings rules
and showing how it is played:

Presentation The teachers will go over the key vocabulary

the students need to know to understand the
game. Additionally, the teacher will explain
the rules of how to play hurling in-depth and
go over important vocabulary you must know
to understand the game.

Practice and Application The teachers will split the students into two
teams and the students will have to reenact a
game of hurling, following the rules they were
taught during the lesson.

Review and Assessment The students will make a pamphlet stating the
rules of Hurling and other information they
think was important from the lesson. After
everyone finishes, if there is time, the students
will share them with the class. If not, the
teachers will collect them and look at them
later. Finally, the students will do a think-pair-
share with the question “Would you want to
join a hurling team? Why or why not?

Extension The students will label a diagram with the

correct vocabulary words.
