Working DNV GL – Transmission and Distribution Technology, Netherlands

Experience Mechanical Engineer, April 2019 – Present
• Developing designs for underground cable termination points for 150 kV and 110 kV lines by
considering the applicable statutory clearances and structural loads.
• Profiling of existing lines (using PLS-CADD) with operating voltages between 110 kV and 380
kV to determine compliance to the Dutch national standards.
• Modelling of transmission line towers in PLS Tower to determine the required upgrades once
conductors are changed.
• Development and modification of excel based tools to streamline the design process.
• Participating in factory acceptance testing on behalf of clients who purchase power line
components from manufacturers worldwide.
• Ensuring designs comply to requirements originating from the Eurocodes and Dutch national
standards.

Eskom - Power Delivery Engineering, South Africa

Mechanical Engineer, June 2013 – April 2019
• I worked on all project phases from concept design until the completion of execution, ensuring
the development of innovative designs and effective leadership of design teams.
• Development of designs for projects involving the rehabilitation or modification of existing lines
as well as the construction of new lines with operating voltages between 132 kV and 765 kV.

CV
• Provision of mechanical designs for bypasses at substations; design and specification of power
line and fibre optic cable hardware; and mechanical analysis of power line structures.
• Technical evaluation of tender submissions for construction projects and provision of
engineering support to contractors during project execution.
• Appointed as a senior member of the fibre optics technology group overseeing the design and
installation of fibre cables on power lines.
• Preparation of BOQs, design reports and specifications.
• Undertaking regular site visits to ensure projects are executed in the approved manner and in
accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
• Management of project resources, timelines and control costs.
• Within the Fibre Optics Group, I provided consulting services to internal Eskom customers
which included the translation of requirements into design parameters for fibre optic cable
refurbishment and installation projects.
• Development of Eskom fibre optic standards.
• Participated in factory evaluations of potential suppliers.
• Development of criteria for evaluating fibre cable products from potential suppliers.
• Appointed as a member of the Profile Review Committee and the Structural Committee,
operating within the power lines department with responsibility for evaluating the PLS-CADD
models of lines and evaluating the proposed construction methodologies which contractors
planned to use during the construction of power lines.

Achievements:
• Developed an automated spreadsheet which generates the bill of materials for projects which
involve the installation of fibre cables on power lines. Prior to my involvement in the fibre optics
technology group, the bill of materials was done manually and would take approximately 4 - 5
hours to compile. Using my excel template it took around 30 minutes.
• Appointed as the responsible person for all fibre optics projects relating to power lines. Within
this role I streamlined communication between departments to ensure that engineering designs
catered for the requirements of all stakeholders. This resulted in an increase in the standard of
project execution.
• Appointed as a member of the team which provided technical oversight on a new contract
structure which Eskom used to interact with fibre cable suppliers and installers. The new
contract resulted in a significant reduction in costs. My technical input to the development of
the contract involved developing tender evaluation criteria which was used to assess
tenderers, factory evaluations of suppliers, as well as the development of standards and
specifications which highlighted Eskom's technical requirements to tenderers and bills of
quantities for pricing purposes.
• I was constantly involved in skills transfer relating to the design and installation of fibre optic
cables on power lines, educating both peers and superiors.
• Selected as part of a team who travelled to Germany, China and England to evaluate suppliers
who intended to supply Eskom with various power line products, August 2017.

Eskom – Transmission Grids, South Africa

Graduate Trainee, 3 December 2012 – 28 December 2012
• Gained and developed technical skills via on-the-job training, as well as professional skills in
project management and presentation.
• Exposed to leadership and professional skills development, providing opportunities for growth.
• Conducted analyses of power line failure case studies and development of recommendations
to prevent recurrence of failure mechanisms.

University of Kwa-Zulu Natal Mechanical Engineering Department, South Africa

Research Assistant, 2011, 2010 & 2013
• Conducted investigations into replacement options for linear axes on various manufacturing
modules.
• Research related to the theory of cellular manufacturing methods and models.
• Dates included: 4 July 2011 – 22 July 2011; 4 January 2012 – 24 January 2012; 2 January
2013 – 28 February 2013.

• Camden - Duvha 400 kV OPGW Installation

• Duvha - Matla 400 kV OPGW Installation
• Drakensburg - Venus 400 kV OPGW Installation
• Athene - Hillside 132 kV OPGW Installation
• Spitskop - Gaborone 132 kV OPGW Installation
➢ Contributed to the development of a construction methodology which minimised the
probability of structural failure. This project was technically complex due to the type of
structures which were used on the power line. The structures were dependent on the
earthwire for stability and since the earthwire had to be replaced with an OPGW, we
had to ensure the structures were stabilised before installing the OPGW. The project
was completed successfully within the deadline and without any safety incidents.
• Perseus - Gamma 765 kV Line
• “Golden Triangle” OPGW Scheme
➢ Optimised the engineering designs to reduce the cost of the project. The optimised
design is expected to result in a cost saving of R92 million when the project is
executed. Generated designs for this project within significant time constraints.
• Jupiter 275 kV Bypass: Concept and detailed design.
• Aurora 400 kV Bypass: Concept and detailed design.
• Georgedale – Venus 275 kV Tower Failure: Detailed structural analysis of a failed tower
using PLS Tower software.
