UNIT STARTER: WELCOME BACK

I. OBJECTS:
At the end of lesson, ss will be able
 To remind ss of the story characters from Family and Friends 3
 To revise greetings and introductions
 To understand a short storyxzs xz
 To revise like + ing, can for permission, would like for requests
 To revise food words
II. PROCEDURES:

Teacher's activities
1. Warm-up Greeting
(10 mins) Play a game: Simon says to get ss ready for a new lesson
2. Lesson 1: a. Song
Song and Lead in:
Story - Have ss look at the title of the song and guess what the song is about
- Explain that they are going to listen to the Welcome song and then sing it.
Listen and sing:
- Play the recording once for ss to listen and follow the song in their books.
- Focus attention on the words. Read each line for ss to repeat after you.
- Play the recording again for ss to sing along
Further activity:
- Divide the class into four groups. Give each group one line of the song to sing.
- Play the recording. Point to each group and encourage them to sing the song
loudly and clearly
b. Story
Lead-in
- Ask if ss remember any characters from Family and Friends 3. Elicit their names.
Write them on the board
- Ask questions: Who is Max's sister? Who are Amy and Leo? Where are they
from?
- Explain that Max and Holly are brother and sister, Amy and Leo are their cousins.
- Focus on the story. Poin to the characters and ask Who's this? Where are they?
Can you see Holly?
- Encourage ss to predict what the story is about.
Listen and read
- Play the recording for ss to listen and follow
- Play the recording again for ss to listen, pause after each line for them to read the
story

- Ss practise acting out the story in their groups with three roles.
- Ask some groups to come to the front to act out the story.
Post teach:
- Check understanding: Ask ss some comprehension questions to check ss if they
can understand the story: Who is Miss Wells? What does Leo like doing? Who
loves taking photos? Who reads books about skateboards?
- Further activities: Mini-presentation: Introduce your family (yourself, your
mother/father, your brother/sister, your cousin)
+ Who is he/she?
+ How old is he/she?
+ What does he/she like doing?
3. Lesson 2: a. Like
Speaking Lead-in
Mime the activities: Have ss come to the board, give them a word and ask them to mime
the activities for their friends to guess.
Ask ss questions with Do you like….?
Presentation
- Quickly revise on the use of the verb like to talk about hobbies
- Ask ss What do you like doing? and elicit more examples
Practice
- Ss work in pairs, ask and answer questions about Max, Amy, Holly and Leo
- Ss practice invidually with speaking cards about hobbies
Further activity
- Speaking: Invite two students to come to the board at a time, one would ask question
about his/her friends appearance and the whole class would answer the questions
b. Can
Lead-in
Ask ss what they use to talk about their ability to elicit the use of can
Presentation
- Quickly revise on the use of can
- Ask ss What can you do? and elicit more examples
Practice:
- Have ss do the exercise in their textbook
- Ask ss to work in pairs, think of situations and use can to ask for permission
c. Food words
Lead-in
Write the word food on the board and ask ss to list out all the words they know in two
minutes. Ask ss which are uncountable/ countable nouns.
Presentation
- Quickly revise on uncountable/ countable nouns.
- Revise on th structure with would like
- Ask ss What would you like when you go shopping? and elicit more examples
Practice:

- Have ss speaking with the exercise in their textbook


- Ss work individually to complete the exercise in handouts and practice talking about the
thing they would like
