UNIT 1: THE FOOD HERE IS GREAT


PERIOD 3 + 4: GRAMMAR + SONG + PHONICS (PAGE 10 & 11)
I/ Objectives:
 To learn some time markers
 To practice sentences with present simple and present continuous
 To use the present simple and present continuous and time markers in the context of a song
 To revise the long a and long e sounds
 To identify these sounds with the letters ai, ay, a_e, ee, ea, ey
 To identify these sounds in a text

- Greeting
- Suggested activity: Revise on the present simple vs the present continuous
+ Have ss work in teams, take turn to choose a number and answer the question given:

1/ Warm-up + Or: Spot the lie
Have ss prepared a piece of paper and ask them to write three sentences about themselves
or their family members using the present simple and present continuous. Two statements
are true, one if false. Ask ss to read out three sentences and have other ss guess which one
is false.

2/ Lesson 3: Lead-in:
Speaking - Hold up the food flashcards from the previous lesson and make sentences (I
always have bread for lunch)
- Ask ss questions with How often do you...? to elicit answers using adverbs of
frequency from ss
Presentation:
- Focus on the time markers in the grammar boxes
- Ask ss which time markers we use for the present simple and which we use for the
present continuous
- Point to a random time marker and ask ss to make sentences with it
- Write two examples on the board: We walk to school and We are happy and ask ss
to put the adverb of frequency always in the sentences to elicit the position of
adverbs of frequey in a sentence
Practice
+ Speaking
- Ask ss to look at the pictures of food at the top of the table and the girls' names in
the left-hand column.
- Ask two ss to read the speec bubbles and elicit the answer for thr second speech
bubble.
- Have ss do the exercise in pairs, ask some of them to say and answer their
sentences for the class

+ Writing:
- Tell ss to write sentences about the girls. Elicit the first sentence (Karren is having
a bowl of soup now) and write it on the board
- Have ss comple the exercise and check their answers
Lead in:
Song - Ask ss to look at the pictures and ask questions: Where is the girl? What is she
doing? What is she eating?
- Ask ss to look at the title as well and ask them to predict what the song is about
Listen and sing:
- Listen and point to the pictures
- Listen and follow the words
- Explain new words
- Recite the words of the song with the class, without the recording. Say each line
and ask ss to repeat
- Play the recording again for ss to sing along
Sing and do:
- Ask class to decide the actions for the song
- Practice actions with class.
- Play the recording, ss listen and do actions.
Post teach:
- Ss work in groups and practice singing the song
- Call some groups to come up, sing and act it out (One team sings, the other does
actions)
- Ask ss to create another version for the song.
- Ask ss some further questions about the song: Do you like the song? Is it easy to
sing? and ask ss Do you often go to your friend’s house? What do you often
eat/drink? Is the food delicious?

Lesson 4: Lead in:
Phonics - Draw a train, a tray, a cake, a tree, leaves, key on the board for ss to elicit the
words.
- Say the words several times for ss to listen and repeat
- Underline the letters ai, ay, a_e, ea, ee, ey in these word
Presentation:
- Draw students' attention to the letters
- Model the sound to ss to listen and repeat
- Point to each picture and say the words for ss to repeat
Practice:
Controlled activities:
- Play the recording for them to listen and point in their book
- Play again and ss repeat all the sounds and words in chorus
- Call some individuals to say out loud.

Listen and read


Pre-reading:
- Ask ss to look at the three pictures. Ask Where is the child? Where are the
children? What is the woman looking for?
While-reading:
- Play the recording for ss to listen and follow the text and pictures
- Play the recording again and pause for ss to repeat
- Ask some ss to read out the text
Post –reading:
- Do exercise 3, 4
- Ask ss work in two groups and find out more words with the sound long a, long e
(Note: Ss many end up finding words with the sound short e, help them to
distinguish between the long e and the short e and give them some more
examples)
- Ss pratice reading with more words:

- Distinguish the long a and long e: Teacher reads out some words for ss to listen. If
they hear the sound long e, they clap their hands. If they hear the sound long a,
they raise their hands.
- SS can practice with these tongue twisters

Wrap-up - Ask ss what they have learnt in the lesson, remind ss of the homework
