ICT ASSIGNMENT NO.1

QUESTION NO.1
SELECT AN APPLICATION OF IoT FROM DAILY LIFE AND EXPLAIN THE ROLE OF IoT IN THAT
SYSTEM.

IoT (Internet of Things) has brought many changes in the life of human beings. With billions
of devices connected across the world, it has enabled efficient communication and fast data
transfer for many purposes such as Entertainment, Convenience, Security, Traffic
Management, business and more.

Smart Homes
One of the most common applications of IoT is Smart Homes. It helps provide home comfort
and security through artificial intelligence and sensors equipped in devices. For example, a
smart light bulb that allows easy control from a smartphone and an advanced locking system.

Role of IoT in Smart Homes

The most significant benefits of IoT in Smart Homes which will depict its importance and role
in this system are as follows:

Monitoring and Control

IoT greatly improves the way you can control and monitor all the processes going on in your
home. Smart home appliances can ensure that we never run out of things like mineral water,
juice or milk by monitoring consumption in our household and giving us warning before
something is completely used up, just like the car telling us when its fuel is low. (2)

Comfort
People have always wanted to make everything more convenient and comfortable, and IoT
in smart homes is perhaps the biggest success in this direction. It perfectly deals with the task
of simplifying and improving your life. Connected devices at home measure the productivity
of home tasks, and they measure people’s mood by using body sensors. Analysis of all this
data help in creating a better, convenient and comfortable environment to live in.

Better Security
Smart Home Security System is an excellent tool for protecting your property because it
provides complete control over everything inside and outside your home. All the devices and
gadgets like security cameras, smart locks, as well as motion, smoke and other sensors work
together to alert you if something goes wrong. You can check what's going on in and around
your home while you're sitting in your office or enjoying a vacation on the other part of
world. (2)

Energy Savings
By knowing the statistics of the work and energy consumption of each smart device, you can
easily optimize them in such a way that they will save both energy and money.

For example, by sensing whether people are in the house or in which rooms they are, a smart
thermostat can either turn off the heating or cooling completely, or focus on the room where
people are - both improving energy consumption and increasing people's comfort. Lights can
be automatically dimmed depending on the time of day. (2)

Entertainment
Smart Homes have brought many advancements in the field of entertainment. Control of
entertainment devices like speakers, smart TVs, Smart Rgb lights (Mostly used in parties),
Virtual home assistant and lot of other entertainment devices are in the palm of our hands.

All these things have become possible due to IoT, so it plays a very important role in Smart
Homes.

QUESTION NO.2
HOW A BUSINESS CAN USE TECHNOLOGY SUCH AS AUGMENTED REALITY(TOOLS) TO
MARKET ITS PRODUCTS AS PER CUSTOMER NEEDS.

Augmented Reality
Augmented Reality is defined as the technology and methods that allow overlaying of real-
world objects and environments with 3D virtual objects using an AR device, and allow the
virtual to interact with the real-world objects to create intended meanings. Augmented reality
(AR) is one of the biggest technology trends right now, and it’s only going to get bigger as AR
ready smartphones and other devices become more accessible around the world. It is a
growing trend among companies involved in mobile computing and business applications in
particular.

Use of Augmented Reality in businesses

Businesses from various industries have started introducing augmented reality to their
customers a long time ago, as each industry found that they could adapt the technology to
their exact needs. Its uses in various businesses and industries are as follows:

ICT ASSIGNMENT NO.1

Marketing
Marketers are constantly looking for ways to sell their products more effectively. They were
undoubtedly the first to use AR for business in an attempt to try something new. Augmented
technology in marketing has many uses, such as augmented packaging or AR enhanced
advertisements. Immersive 3D technologies are creating new opportunities for brand owners
to connect with consumer through interactive and virtual reality (VR) storytelling. (1)

Manufacturing
The manufacturing industry started to look into the human-machine interaction long ago. The
factories depend on the humans working and managing all the processes, but many things
can be delegated to the computers. These manual processes, like advanced AR training for
the staff, quality assurance, and data analytics, give people more space for productivity.

Design and Modelling

AR takes modeling to another level, as this technology allows designers to see 3D models of
their creations. When the designs are pulled off the screens and into the natural world
surroundings, it allows us to see all of their potential flaws and needed improvements. (1).
Thus, it helps businesses in making better and cost-effective products.

Recruitment
AR also lends itself well in finding employees with the right skill set. A company can create an
AR game that requires the use of many skills that are necessary for success at work. Potential
hires can download the game and effectively demonstrate their value to the company. This
strategy can have the advantage of attracting candidates while allowing the company to
assess the potential talent of each prospect. In short, the recruitment process becomes simple
and effective. (3)

Logistics
Although many processes in the logistics industry require human attention, AR technology
allows workers to make some things easier. For example, product shipping has been made
easier with QR codes displaying information about picked-up items and AR glasses that allow
products to be identified for delivery. (1)

Data Analysis
AR in business is suitable for both data collection and data analysis. All business owners know
that data is the most valuable asset to a company's growth. The more information they have
about customers, the market and their competitors, the faster they can promote their
product to their target audience.

QUESTION N0.3
DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN AUGMENTED REALITY AND VIRTUAL REALITY ALSO DISCUSS THE
APPLICATIONS OF VR IN OUR DAILY LIFE.

What is Augmented Reality (AR)?

Augmented reality (AR) is the perfect combination of the digital world and physical elements
to create an artificial environment. Apps that are developed using AR technology for mobile
devices or desktop computers to connect digital components with the real world.

Example: AR technology helps display score overlays in televised sports games and display 3D
photos, text messages and emails. (4)

What is Virtual Reality (VR)?

Virtual reality (VR) is a computer-generated simulation of an alternate world or reality. It is
used in 3D movies and video games. It helps create simulations similar to the real world and
"immerse" the viewer using computers and sensory devices such as headsets and gloves.

In addition to games and entertainment, virtual reality is also used for training, education and
science. The full form of VR is virtual reality. (5)

Difference Between Augmented Reality (AR) vs Virtual Reality (VR)

Here are the important differences between AR and VR:

Augmented Reality (AR) Virtual Reality (VR)

The system augments the real-world scene. Completely immersive virtual environment

In AR User always have a sense of presence in In VR, visual scenes are under control of the
the real world system.

AR is 25% virtual and 75% real VR is 75% virtual and 25% real

This technology partially immerses the user into This technology fully immerses the user into
the action the action.

AR requires upwards of 100 Mbps bandwidth. VR requires at least a 50 Mbps connection.

No AR headset is needed. Some VR headset device is needed.

It is used to enhance both real and virtual It is used to enhance fictional reality for the

Applications of Virtual Reality (VR):

Here are the important applications of VR:

1. Automotive industry:
VR allows engineers and designers to easily experiment with the look and design of a vehicle
before putting expensive prototypes into service. Companies like BMW and Jaguar Land Rover
(JLR) have been using VR for years to conduct initial designs and technical reviews to check
the visual design and blackout of a vehicle object – all before money is spent on physically
manufacturing the parts.

2. Healthcare:
VR has a significant impact on healthcare. In November 2021, the FDA approved the
prescription drug EaseVRx to treat pain reduction in adults. The system uses cognitive
behavioral therapy and other behavioral principles such as deep relaxation, attention shifting,
interoceptive awareness and more to help reduce chronic pain. VR is even being used as pain
relief for burns.

3. Education:
VR could revolutionize education by allowing students to learn in an immersive and
experiential way from anywhere in the world. VR provides an opportunity to democratize
education by opening opportunities to students of all backgrounds that may not have been
possible before. For example, Victory XR has partnered with Engage to provide digital twin
campuses that allow students to learn in live, interactive classrooms from the world's
brightest minds.

4. Architecture:
VR is gradually changing the way that architects design and experiment with their work. VR
makes it possible to see not just what a building or space will look like but how it will feel.

5. Recruitment:
Lloyds Banking Group became the first organization in the UK to introduce a VR exercise to
assess graduates for their recruitment in 2017. In the future, VR could be used to assess key
skills required for a job, such as decision-making, for job interviews and could would even
replace assessment days altogether by gathering candidates in the metaverse. (6)

QUESTION NO.4
DISCUSS YOUR HOME INTERNET TECHNOLOGY. HOW ARE YOU CONNECTING MULTIPLE
DEVICES WITH THIS NETWORK.

The home network or small area network enables multiple devices e.g., PCs, tablets etc. to
connect to each other, and also to connect to the internet.

The main components required to build a typical home/small business network are:

➢ Router or Wireless router – Connects the network to the Internet.

➢ Wireless Access Point – Used to Connect Wi-Fi equipped devices to the network.
➢ Ethernet HUB or Switch -Used to Connect Ethernet equipped devices.
➢ Cable cat 5, cat5e or cat 6 with RJ45 connectors.
➢ Telephone Cable with RJ 10 connectors.

Nowadays, mostly Wireless internet network are being used at home for connecting
multiple devices to internet. This can be done using a wireless Router.

In my house, I am using PTCL (Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited) as Internet

Service Provider (ISP). It is the largest internet service provider in Pakistan which is
providing internet services to millions of users in the whole country. It gives me a
bandwidth of 20MPS and it costs me PKR 5000 per month.

Home Wireless Networks:

The installation of wireless networks using Wi-Fi is quick and Convenient, but wireless
networks are generally slower than the wired networks. (7)

Wireless Network Advantages:

• Easy installation and setup from an end user perspective.

• Allows an easy access to smart phones, Tablets and mobile devices.
• It doesn’t require cables to run.

The home network diagram below shows the structure of a typical small home network using
a wireless router and connected to the Internet.

ICT ASSIGNMENT NO.1

For most home networks the Wireless Router or Hub which connects the network to the
Internet will be the main component of the home or small home office network, and in many
cases, it will be the only component.

Configuration of my Home Network:

I administrate my home internet through the web browser using the IP address “192.168.1.1”
and login in as admin using a login and a password which is by default “Admin” for username
as well as password.

Before you allow devices to connect to your home network you should make some basic
changes to the default setup parameters of your router.

The two Important things that are needed to be taken into account are:

▪ SSID (Service Set Identifier) –used to access the Router which is the name of your
network
▪ Router Password – which is “Admin” by default

Connecting Wi-Fi Devices:

The standard way to connect a Wi-Fi device to a Wi-Fi network is to connect to the network
and enter the password when prompted.

However, most modern Wi-Fi routers/hubs support a feature called WPS (Wi-Fi protected
setup). This usually involves pressing a button on the WIFI router and the corresponding WPS
connection button on the device. (7)

Connecting to Internet:
A firewall protects computers and devices on a home or small business network from
intruders from the Internet. It effectively acts as a one-way digital gateway, blocking access
to your network from devices on the Internet, but allowing devices on your network to
connect to devices on the Internet. (8) It is shown in the picture below:
