INTRODUCTION
Stress Management
DEFINITION T STRESS
Stress is our body's response to pressure. Many different situations or life events can
cause stress. It is often triggered when we experience something new or unexpected
that threatens our sense of self or when we feel we have little control over a situation.
TYPE OF STRESS
HYPERSTRESS
o When a person is pushed beyond what they can handle
o Being overloaded or overworked. When someone is hyper-stressed, even
little things can trigger a strong emotional response.
o Ex: working mothers who have to multi-task, juggling between family
commitments.
HYPOSTRESS
o Experienced by a person who is constantly bored.
o Ex: unchallenging job such as performing the same task over and over,
will often experience hypo stress.
As related to this situation, a 46 years old lady named Priyanka works in the private
sector and is facing hyper stress. Due to COVID-19, her company is at a loss. Lately,
certain people have been terminated. This situation made her anxious.
Covid-19 was declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) on
March 11, 2020, the first time since H1N1 influenza was declared a pandemic in 2009
(World Health Organization, 2020). Further, it is a global pandemic and public health
emergency that has had a significant impact on the global economy and financial
markets whereby the disease mitigation measures that have been implemented in many
countries have resulted in significant income reductions, increased unemployment, and
disruptions in the transportation, service, and manufacturing industries (Anton Pak,
2020). The pandemic of Covid-19 has impacted negatively on labor markets, with
disproportionately negative consequences for employment.

Almost more than a year into the Covid-19 crisis, we can see how the pandemic is
affecting our employment matters. Employees, including women and working parents,
are having the most difficulty which leads to work from a home dilemmas. Meanwhile,
due to the economic downturn brought on by the pandemic, the most private sector is
facing difficulties such as profit loss and forcing them to act in a harsh way such as
cutting working hours to reduce labor costs, termination of work, and providing leave
with no pay to the employees. Thus, this situation has developed into problems or
challenges for employment in Malaysia.

OVERCOME PRIYANKA’S STRESS DUE TO WORK PRESSURE AND COVID-19
PANDEMIC.
1. ABRUPT CHANGE
Any kind of change is a potential stressor in life. The more rapid and significant
the change is, the greater the resulting stress. As in Priyanka’s situation due to
COVID-19, her company is at a loss and certain people have been dismissed.

2. FEELING OVERCOMMITTED
People experience stress when they find themselves involved in complicated
commitments, promises, expectations, and arrangements. When we try very hard
to live up to all the commitments, promises, expectations, and arrangements and
fail at some point, we become frustrated and this leads up to a complicated life.
This is the same as Priyanka’s feeling also. She feels frustrated when the
company goes on a loss and sees her co-workers losing their jobs and family
commitments.
METHOD TO OVERCOME:
i. Structure your day
Staying on a schedule can help you feel better. Create time to work on
your job situation, time for leisure, and time to do things that help improve
your mental health.
ii. Talk it over with someone you trust.
Sometimes, talk to someone you trust, especially family members, an
expert has advised may relieve the tension.

3. JOB INSECUARITY
The stress and anxiety associated with job insecurity can lead to biological
regulation of the release of stress hormones being disrupted, jeopardizing the
body's immune system, and affecting the health and wellbeing of workers.
METHOD TO OVERCOME:
i. Be open to opportunities
Priyanka should be explored job opportunities within the organization she
working for. See if there are other departments that can use her skills. If
there are no internal opportunities, conduct a regular job search on your
free time or during weekends. Actively network by attending job fairs,
lectures and symposia. Keep your LinkedIn profile and resume up-to-date.
Keep your resume ready at all times so you can quickly apply should an
opportunity present itself.

4. CHANGES TO DUTIES
Change is more likely to lead to stress when the change has consequences for
matters that are central to employees’ sense of self, and particularly so when the
personal self is salient. This effect is mediated by feelings of uncertainty. Thus,
Priyanka also feeling stress when there is a change on her daily duties.
